[edit] Controversies
Summer Jam has been home to many controversies over recent years:
In 2001, Jay-Z performed "Takeover" for the first time. The track was then aimed at the rapper Prodigy of Mobb Deep and to compliment his words, Jay-Z placed a picture of a younger Prodigy in a tutu on the stadium's big screens. He then finished the song with "ask Nas, he don't want it with Hov'/NO!". This line lead to Nas's line from his own "Stillmatic Freestyle" ("Is he h to the izzo, m to the izzo? For shizzle you phony, the rapping version of Sisqó"). Once Jay-Z heard this, he added the now infamous third verse to "Takeover" aimed directly at Nas.
In 2002, Nas was scheduled to perform at that year's Summer Jam, but was pulled from the line-up when Hot 97 refused to let him perform a mock lynching of Jay-Z.
In 2004, when G-Unit was on the stage, many items were hurled on stage by Bang 'Em Smurf, Domination, and their affiliates because of the duo's beef with 50 Cent and comments about R. Kelly, who also perfromed that night.
In 2005, The Game started his G-Unot boycott campaign by dissing G-Unit openingly and helping members of his crew beat up someone dressed in a rat costume (to signify that 50 Cent was a snitch for the NYPD).
