sqrt(a) = sqrt(a^2 + r)

That's not correct is it?

sqrt(2) != sqrt(4 + r) (if r is positive)

We call this 'weaving' in dutch, it's incorrect use of the = sign.

  • Whoever put up the original formula did it completely incorrectly. This has been fixed in the main article. Was: sqrt(a) =~ sqrt(a^2 + r) =~ a + r/(2a) Now: sqrt(x) =~ sqrt(x-1) + 1/(2sqrt(x-1)) with the rationale sqrt(a^2 + r) =~ a + r/(2a). Demonstration: (Formula:) sqrt(82) =~ sqrt(81) + 1/(2sqrt(81)) = 9 + 1/18 = 9.0555... (Calculator:) sqrt(82) =~ 9.0553... (Formula:) sqrt(83) =~ sqrt(82) + 1/(2sqrt(82)) =~ 9.0555 + 1/18.111 = 9.1107... (Calculator:) sqrt(83) =~ 9.1104... and so on. The Formula interpolates the sqrt of non-squares based on the known sqrt of squares or the interpolated sqrt of other non-squares. -- Thoreaulylazy 00:58, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
