Sultan Alam is a former Cleveland Police Constable who was sentenced to 18 months in 1996 for conspiracy to steal vehicle parts , but always claimed he was innocent.

The former Cleveland Police constable's allegations were taken up by the Police Complaints Authority after his release - and officers from the Northumbria Force were asked to investigate on its behalf.

In June 2003, Cleveland Police confirmed that four of its officers, one of them who then retired, are to be charged with conspiricy to pervert the course of justice.

The charges were then later dropped.

When Mr Alam claimed costs from the police federation, the claim was refused and he took the case further to the Employment Tribunal. Representing himself for 7 days of hearings, the Employment Tribunal delivered its decision in September 2006 finding the Police Federation of England & Wales guilty of unlawful race discrimination against him and were also found guilty of victimisation.
