Sully Erna (born Salvatore Paul Erna February 7, 1968 in Lawrence, Massachusetts) is the vocalist for the hard rock band, Godsmack.

He is both a vocalist and a songwriter for his band, yet Erna also plays the guitar, both on albums and during live shows. He began playing drums at the age of 3. His father was a trumpet player and would rehearse in the basement where Sully would go to sleep in the empty guitar cases. His great grandfather was a famous composer in Sicily, where every year they honor his birthday and his pictures are hung in a museum. At the age of 11 it was discovered that it was easier for him to listen to something and play it than it was to read sheet music. He stopped taking lessons and sat at home rehearsing to records by Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. At 14 Bonham of Led Zeppelin and Peart of Rush became his new instructors. He signed his first record deal in 1993 with a band called Strip Mind. Their debut album "What's in Your Mouth" sold less than 50,000 units. The band self-destructed shortly after.[1] He was also in Meliah Rage and The Fighting Cocks. In Godsmack's concerts he sometimes plays on the bongos and an entire drum set and stages a drumming duel known as Batalla de los Tambores with drummer Shannon Larkin. This battle has become a staple of the band's live show. He is also a skilled harmonica player as present on the Godsmack song Shine Down. He stands 5'5" tall and has a daughter, Skylar Brooke, born in 2001[2].

[edit] Poker

Sully Erna participated in the 2006 World Series of Poker in which he made a brief appearance on the ESPN broadcast of the event; it was mentioned that he was the last of the celebrity entries. He finished in 713th out of 8,773 earning him $17,730 [3] Sully takes poker very seriously and he looks to play in many more events in the coming year including World Poker Tour events and WSOP.
