"Suffer Well" is the third single of the album Playing the Angel by Depeche Mode, and their forty-third single overall. It was released in the UK on 27 March 2006. Like "A Pain That I'm Used To", it has been released in the US via digital downloads (i.e. iTunes). [1]
It is the first Depeche Mode single whose lyrics are written by David Gahan. It is not the first single written by him overall, however, since he wrote the lyrics for his solo work. It is also the first Depeche Mode single that's not written by Martin Gore since "Just Can't Get Enough" in 1981 which was written by Vince Clarke and the first Depeche Mode single ever to be co-written with non-Depeche Mode members (Andrew Phillpot and Christian Eigner wrote the music). The B-Side for the single is "Better Days," a short song with an industrial-punk feel to it.

[edit] Music video (Anton's return)
The video was filmed by Anton Corbijn in mid-December 2005 in California, following DM's appearance at the KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas on December 11, 2005. It was his first music video for the band, excluding tour projections and promo videos, since "Useless" in 1997. It will likely be his last music video for a while, since he's taking a break from music videos to work on his first film, Control, which is about the late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. The video started to air on TV in early February.
The video features a cameo appearance by Gahan's wife, Jennifer, once as the angel and once as herself. Another cameo is by the band's manager, Jonathan Kessler, who plays Gahan's limo driver. Other highlights include Gore as a bride and Fletcher as a groom. It also features the disco ball seen in the cover art of "Suffer Well". Some say the video is a metaphor for Gahan's drug troubles in the 1990s that almost led to suicide.

In December 2005, Gahan recorded a special vocal track for the song; with help from EA Games, the lyrics were translated into "Simlish" (the language of the game The Sims 2) and later appeared in The Sims 2: Open For Business as one of the games new songs. Other New Wave songs were also remixed in Simlish and added to the game, such as Howard Jones's "Things Can Only Get Better".

The song was issued to "go for adds" in the U.S. in the first week of February 2006; that is, a promotional copy of the single was submitted to Modern Rock radio stations during that week in an effort to convince the stations to add it to their playlists. At this time, it has been added to the playlists of several stations in the United States West, including KXRK (Salt Lake City), KROQ (Los Angeles), KNDD (Seattle), and KBTZ (San Diego).
By mid-February 2006, the song had been added to the playlists of twenty-three modern rock stations in the United States. The stations offering it the most play were KXRK, KJEE (Santa Barbara), KCXX (Riverside), and WGVX (Minneapolis). Several stations added "John the Revelator" to their playlists during the time when it was slated to be released as the second single from Playing the Angel in the U.S. Even after the release of "Suffer Well", they continued to offer "John the Revelator" heavy airplay, and none of them added "Suffer Well" to their playlists during this time, possibly hindering the single's potential in the U.S. market in the time soon after its release.
Nonetheless, "Suffer Well" was consistently added to about three stations each week following its release and by early March 2006 was receiving exposure on 45 stations. The song moved comfortably within the top fifty alternative rock songs in the U.S. at this time. It reached number thirty-eight on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
"Suffer Well" reached number one on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, the band's seventh song to top this chart.

"Suffer Well" was added to the playlist of Xfm London on 27 February 2006. However, it failed to make the playlist of any BBC Radio station. Despite this, it entered the UK charts at number twelve, besting "A Pain That I'm Used To"'s performance.
