Subsurface Lithoautotrophic Microbial Ecosystems, or SLIMEs, are defined by Edward O. Wilson as "unique assemblages of bacteria and fungi that occupy pores in the interlocking mineral grains of igneous rock beneath Earth's surface."[1]
