The reactant an enzyme acts on is referred to as the substrate.

The substrate enters an active site, attaching by weak bonds. Meanwhile, the enzyme changes shape so that its active site embraces the substrate. The substrate is then converted into products which are released and the active site is available for another molecule of substrate.
