Subhadra Kumari Chauhan

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan (1904-1948) was a well known poetess of Indian origin. She was born in a village called Nihalpur in Allahabad, India. Soon after her marriage in 1919, she joined the Indian freedom struggle and was the first woman Satyagrahi to court arrest in Nagpur. The author of a number of popular works in Hindi poetry, her most famous composition is Jhansi Ki Rani. The poem is one of the most recited and sung poems in Hindi literature.
The english translation of her famous poems first stanza is as follows-
"The thrones shook and royalties scowled
Old India was invigorated with new youth
People realised the cost of lost freedom
Everybody was determined to throw the westerners out
The sabre that glistened in 1857 was old
The story we heard from mouths of the bards
Well fought the brave queen of Jhansi.'
