Subdivisions of Galicia

Galicia was the largest and most populous province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and existed from 1772 to 1918. Today, Galicia is a historical region split between Poland and Ukraine. The subdivisions of Galicia consisted of 73 Administrative Districts in 1877 and 78 in 1900. These districts were responsible for storing vital records.

Today Galicia belong to 3 Polish voivodeships (Malopolskie, Podkarpackie and Slaske) and 3 Ukrainian oblasts (Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil).[1]

The government assigned some towns the status of Jewish Administrative Center. These Administrative Centers were responsible for maintaining Jewish vital records.
