Stylish Alastor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alastor is a character from the Capcom video game series Viewtiful Joe (VJ).
Alastor, an electrical demon from the Underworld, is an agent of the Jadow organization that uses the nickname "The Midnight Thunderboy". Though he is allied with Jadow, Alastor doesn't give much thought about his position. Instead he longs to seek out "the ultimate battle", and can be considered an "anti-hero" to an extent. He sees himself as the arch-rival of Viewtiful Joe, and always appears with the intent to defeat him.
In all games he mainly appears in "Blade Master" form as a purple costumed man in tights and light body armor with a horned helmet, wings, and a tail. He does have several other forms depending on the game. In Viewtiful Joe (VJ1) and Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble (RHR) he also appears in "Stylish" form with pointed elf ears and spikey black hair dressed in a black suit and a white tippet with winged skulls embroidered on the ends. In VJ2 he also appears in an "Underworld Emperor" form that resembles the Alastor devil trigger from Devil May Cry. He uses electrical attacks wields a sword, which he can throw and charge with electricity for special attacks. He pilots the giant robot dubbed "Rex Majin" to counter Joe's "Six Majin" robot in Viewtiful Joe : Double Trouble.
In the games, Alastor is voiced by Mikey Kelley. In the anime, he's voiced by Ross Lawrence.

[edit] Alastor in Viewtiful Joe
In the VJ1, Alastor first meets Joe in disguise in the chapter "Another Joe", but drops the act and escapes after losing the fight. In the next stage, "The Midnight Thunderboy" Joe and Alastor meet outside the Jadow base, where Alastor reads from the game script and tells Joe of Jadow's plans. Despite losing both battles, he expresses awe of Joe's "beautiful" fighting skills, which Joe adapts into his "Viewtiful" title.
In the Alastor storyline, he challenges Captain Blue while watching one of his movies with Silvia's twin sister Goldie. Captain Blue then kidnaps Goldie and Alastor follows them into the movie to fight. At first he shows little interest in Goldie and refers to her as "Hey" or "Woman", despite her constant flirting. In the end, however, after saving her and she gets her own V-watch, he does show some feelings for her, and they both fly off.
Alastor can also be unlocked as a playable character in VJ1 by completing it on V-Rated mode, which is unlocked by completing Adults mode. Like the other extra characters in the game, his play mechanics are similar to Joe. However, in Alastor's case there are two important exceptions. The first being that in his Stylish form he has a double jump referred to as 'Air Hike' (another reference to Devil May Cry), and secondly that his VFX meter drains at a continuous and constant rate while in his Blade Maste" form. The player has to press a button to 'Devil Trigger' him into his Blade Master form, in which he can use his VFX powers. However, being in "Blade Master" form causes an auto drain effect on his meter whether or not VFX powers are being used. The upside is that when the player uses his powers the drain carries on at the same rate (unlike the other characters where it speeds up if the player combine powers). When in Blade Master form Alastor can glide great distances using his wings, which is a significant advantage in several boss fights. He can fall normally when the player pulls down on the control stick, but will plummet even faster when using Mach Speed. When the player combines Slow and Mach Speed, Alastor will fly in a straight line.
[edit] Alastor's exchange with Dante in Viewtiful Joe
Dante from Devil May Cry appears as a playable character in PlayStation 2 version of the first game. As part of Dante's storyline, the following exchange takes place between him and Alastor.
- Before the fight.
Alastor: Looks like you're having a hard time... Without my spirit in your sword.
Dante: Who are you?
Alastor: What kind of greeting is that? All that time, being carried on your back.
Dante: Alastor? No wonder the sword rusted out... With its master lurking around in this place.
Alastor: I had very good reasons. Are you listening? He pulls out a book and ahems. "Alastor's Diary: One a Wednesday. Today, Dante and I went out for some demon hunting. Dante spun me around like a madman! And then swung me into a Marionette-wham! When I smashed into the Marionette, it really hurt. But he never apologized."
Dante: Man, you really hold a grudge...
Alastor: He is still reading from the diary. "Day XX, Month XX. Today was the day we were supposed to set off to explore Somewhere Island. But Dante forgot to take me. He left me behind, all on my own. He didn't even send me a postcard."
Dante: I don't remember that...
Alastor: You see? Undeniable proof of your countless wicked deeds! He tosses the diary over his shoulder. I once called you master... But if that strength was a sham, then you had no right to wield me! Let's see who is the strongest, once and for all!
- After the fight.
Alastor: I admit, you are strong. And your strength...is truly... Legendary! You are, after all, my master.
Dante: No need to get mushy on me. We go back a long way. You are the only sword for me. From now on, I'll be faithful.
Alastor: Leave me alone for a time... I need to have a cry.
[edit] Alastor in Viewtiful Joe 2
Alastor, now no longer affiliated with the Jadow, shows up for another fight in Viewtiful Joe 2. Although he loses the first fight, he gains unexpected help when Joe's father, Jet, starts playing "The Black Film". As a result of his powers being amplified by the film's evil, Alastor transforms into his sword and flies at Joe/Silvia in a move similar to his introduction scene in Devil May Cry where he impaled Dante. He then changes into a form similar to Dante's Alastor devil trigger and dubs himself "Underworld Emperor".
[edit] Alastor in Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble
Alastor also arrives for a fight in the Nintendo DS game, Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble. The battle is in two parts: first being face to face, the second being a giant robot duel between Joe's Six Majin and Alastor's Rex Majin. After the battle he faces off against Queen Heidriella, commenting that he wishes to be the one to finally defeat Joe, and will stop anyone who tries to beat him to it.
[edit] Alastor in Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble
Alastor appears in RHR in both Blade Master and Stylish form. They are separate selections and it is possible for two players to play both aspects of the character against one another. Each character in the game gets an extra costume, and Alastor's are both derived from clothing he wore in the Viewtiful Joe anime. Blade Master Alastor gets the purple wedding suit and carnation he wore in episode 15, and Stylish Alastor gets the octopus costume he wore in episode 17. In story mode, Alastor's stage is the first level, and is set in a South American style temple similar to his stage in VJ1. In RHR, he is portrayed as somewhat vain, and wants to star in the movie that Captain Blue is casting for.
[edit] Alastor in the Viewtiful Joe anime
In the anime, Alastor is similar to the video game character. He works for Jadow but cares only about fighting Joe, even though he tends to act more seriously than in the games. He also harbors a small crush on Silvia, and has shown a softer side to his personality. In the anime he cannot switch freely between Blade Master and Stylish forms, and there is a long, multi-episode story arc related to this in the second half (not yet aired in the US).
[edit] Alastor's Attacks
Alastor tends to use the same types of attacks in every game. Red Hot Rumble has several exclusive and modified attacks for both his Blade Master and Stylish forms.
Air Raid - Alastor fires a bolt of lightning at the ground.
Round Trip - Alastor throws a series of swords around the field, which seek out and fly towards enemies. Alastor can also throw his own sword in a boomerang style attack, similar to Joe's "Voomerang" attack.
Stinger - A charging sword thrust.
Vortex - Similar to Joe's zoomed-in jump attacks, Alastor can spin upward into enemies or towards the ground to create electric shockwaves.
Ultraviolet Kick- Alastor's version of Joe's "Red Hot Kick".
Air Hike - Not an attack, but rather a double jump. Unlike other characters, Alastor can double jump without transforming.
High Voltage - Alastor summons a series of hovering blocks which generate beams of violet lightning.
- Red Hot Rumble specific attacks:
Air Raid - When in the air, Alastor points his hands to both sides of him and fires of two medium-long range bolts of lightning. Blade Master Alastor only.
Ground Slash - Alastor sweeps his sword along the ground in front of him. Stylish Alastor only.
Lightening Sword - A powerful multi-hit electrified sword attack with three different charged levels. It charges as the player holds down the attack button, and his sword grows in size and reach the longer the button is pressed. When it is released, Alastor makes an overhead slash with the sword. Opponents standing behind him will not get hit, but anyone caught in front, immediately above, or in the air behind him will take a lot of damage. Blade Master Alastor only.
Round Trip - This is a different attack than the one by the same name that he uses in the other games. He tosses his sword away from him, sending it half way across the level. It then stops in mid-air but begins to spin faster and faster. It will return to Alastor shortly, damaging everything and anything in its path. During this time Alastor can run around in an attempt to lead the sword through enemies and other players. This is very similar to Dante's Round Trip in Devil May Cry. Stylish Alastor only.
Vortex - As described above, except that it can also be used to travel along the ground.
[edit] Trivia
- Alastor (the character) is based off of the powers of the Alastor sword, a quasi-sentient demon sword used by Dante, the main character in the popular PS2 game Devil May Cry. Viewtiful Joe was created by Hideki Kamiya, the same man who created Devil May Cry so the references are intentional.
- The PS2 version of the first Viewtiful Joe game was released after Devil May Cry 2, and in spite of Dante promising to be faithful, the Alastor sword has not reappeared in the Devil May Cry series. Instead Dante uses a different sword named Rebellion. This may be explained by the fact that Hideki Kamiya did not work on the Devil May Cry sequels.
- Alastor's last words after losing to Dante are: "Leave me alone for a time... I need to have a cry." Due to the fact that Alastor is a devil, and he is crying, he indirectly referenced the game in which Dante is the main protagonist, Devil May Cry.
