Styles of kicking

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Australian rules football, there are several different styles of kicking the ball.

These include the:

  • Drop punt, the most accurate method, often used for set shots on goal.
  • Torpedo punt, used for long distance passes.
  • Banana kick or Checkside Punt, used when kicking for goal on a sharp angle or passing to a player at right angles to the direction a player is running.
  • Grubber kick (also called soccering), where the ball is kicked along the ground rather than in the air, usually in rushed proximity shots for goal.
  • Drop kick, rarely if ever used at elite level, is used for greater distance.
