[edit] Ernest Dowson
Just wanted to take a second to welcome you to Wikipedia. Thoughtful, fact-based questioning like yours at Ernest Dowson is much appreciated around here. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. (The Dowson article is a good place to start -- it needs some sprucing up!) If you have questions or if I can ever help you, don't hesitate to contact me. · Katefan0(scribble) 04:37, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for the encouragement. I've started by adding a little on Dowson's death, but don't have Jad Adam's book with me at the moment. I presume my addition is non-controversial. It looks like we need a page on Robert Sherard, I'll make a start on that as well. — Stumps 10:24, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
-
- It was just fine, not controversial at all, but it's good that you're trying to keep that in mind. Remember to be bold, but not reckless! · Katefan0(scribble) 14:46, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

- Sadly, I can give you nothing on Murin. I occasionally go to List of poets and Google a redlink name from there. Depending on what I find, I'll remove the name (vanity) or create a stub. As I was dependant on English-language Google hits, I could get very little on him. Sorry not to be of more help. Filiocht | The kettle's on 13:30, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Alfred Kreymborg
Bravo on your edits to uncle Alfred's page. May I inquire... what your interest in him is? XSG 05:02, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
- It's only a general interest in artistic and literary 'scenes' and how so much of the vital activity doesn't actually come from the big names that make it onto syllabuses, but from more 'minor' figures. Somehow I noticed the page, and then discovered that he appeared in the index of a lot of the books on my shelf, and I became more and more interested as I worked on the article. — Stumps 08:27, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Poetry Wikiproject
The wikiproject looks inactive. Looking at the history, the last message before mine was an edit in November and the dit before that was in August. Additionally, the discussion pages look dormant with comments posted without responses. From the WikiProject page, "A Wikiproject is designed to co-ordinate the efforts of several users, and to allow a group of conceptually related pages to have similar structures and appearance." I don't see any collaboration between users... However, if you'd still like I can (or you can) remove the inactive tag on the wikiproject. Gflores Talk 21:18, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Nabokov and Bely
Nabokov is just a dwarf compared to the genuine giants of prose like Bely and Joyce. Unfortunately, very little of the former is available online. Modern people are after cheap stuff like Bulgakov and T.S.E :) I believe his major work on poetics is Медный Всадник как диалектика ритма in which he analyzes the rythmic structure of the Bronze Horseman line by line, but even our regional library lacks the book. I enjoyed reading his Мастерство Гоголя almost as much as the last volume of his reminiscences: this is the most meticulous study of a text that I've ever seen. I even copied a table which served Bely to compare the occurence of colour epithets in all the works of Gogol. He picked up every colour epithet found in Gogol's books and compiled a chronology of Gogol's colour evolution, showing how the colours mentioned by him most frequently did reflect his psychological state at any given period of his career. There was also a detailed, memorable comparison of Karamzin's, Pushkin's and Gogol's phrase to architectural styles. P.S. My favourite English-language poets are Marvell, Hardy, and Yeats. What are your recommendations? --Ghirla | talk 23:23, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
- Bely's later works are out of print. As for the Symbolism articles, they get reprinted now and then. I even happen to own a copy but it's a hopeless task to find it among thousands volumes in my domestic library now that I move to a new house and my books are packed in boxes. When I unpack the boxes and find it, I'll let you know.
- Keats, Coleridge, Frost, Auden are among my favourites, but Donne is too intellectual for my liking and I have trouble to follow his knotty syntax. By the way, I was recently surprised not to find the articles on Miss Gee and A Toccata of Galuppi's in Wikipedia. Hopefully, this will be amended soon.
- As for modern Russian poetry (I think you talk about living writers), I would single out Bella Akhmadulina in Moscow and Alexander Kushner in St Petersburg, although Brodsky is obviously the most powerful voice to have emerged after WWII. By the way, I just spotted an anon's notice on Talk:Zaum and am at a loss as to how to respond. My interests lie with prose rather than poetry, so I hope you'll give a more adequate answer to his query. --Ghirla | talk 17:10, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Poetry
Yes, I'm still interested.Kdammers 10:23, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, I'd like to see a discussion of Austrian poets (esp. ca. 1890-1930). There are some good works on this subject, but I don't have access to them any more. I'd also like to see more work on classic and contemporary Korean poets. Cross-reading poetry, children's' poetry (what's there now is a pittance and only about one side of the coin), and Ethiopian (ahmharic/Ge'ez) poetry (I only could find an article on Tsegaye Gabre-Medhin) are areas I'd like to see developed. I would like to see the articles on e-poetry and the sonnet improved or expanded. Kdammers 04:54, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Stumps: As I mentioned above, I do not currently have access to works of Austrian poets. If we can't activate some-one with access to a good german-language library, i can try searching on the Internet, including the German Wik. Kdammers 07:49, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
I just scanned through the German Wik, and the only poet I found listed was Lorenz Leopold Haschka, (1749 - 1827). Well, that's a start. Here are some others from various sources on the Net - but I don't know most of them and cannot vouch for their importance. Wolfgang Bauer (contemporary); Hans Carl Artmann (June 12 1921 - December 4 2000), Ingeborg Bachmann (June 25, 1926 - October 17, 1973) (She, of course, is very well known but is already in Wik.}, Erich Fried (1921-88 - Well, I've heard of him - he's noteworthy), Franz Seraphicus Grillparzer (January 15, 1791 - January 21, 1872), Enst Jandl (very clever dadaist), Peter Rosegger (31 July 1843 - 26 June 1918), Adalbert Stifter (23 October 1805 - 28 January 1868), Georg Trakl (February 3, 1887 - November 3, 1914 - a leading poet). Also: Nikolaus Lenau (Britannica online), Diane Broeckhoven, Paul Celan (very famous - probably in Wik, but I can't check while working in this text-box), Zedlitz, Joseph Christian von (1790-1862), Stefan Zweig (very famous dramatist who also wrote some poetry the quality and importance of which I cannot say), Lilian Faschinger (contemporary), Friederike Mayröcker (contemp. leading experimentalist; Jandl's companion?), Raoul Schrott (contemp.), Peter Waterhouse (contemp.), Josef Weinheber (Britan. online), Evelyn Schlag (contemp.), Noebius (19th century). Unfortunately, I didn't come across more than one or two of my favorites from around the turn of the century - and I can't recall their names. There is a book of 'forgotten Austrian poets,' if I'm not mistaken. This would be a good source to check.

[edit] Jacopone da Todi
Hi Stumps, i have created an article about Jacopone da Todi. Jacopone is Umbria's greatest religious poet after St. Francis and i would like to turn it into a great article, but i am afraid my linguistic and technical skills are limited. Maybe a native speaker can give it a look? --Wikipedius 21:22, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for your input, it is floor, not ceiling, it was my mistake, not the sources'. I reviewed the text and answered your questions as best as i could on the discussion page. Jacopone/Iacopone is a mystic and his position is uncompromising: hell/heaven, black/white, no middle ground, no Purgatory, he believes in predestination. This is his simple philosophy. --Wikipedius 22:33, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Turkish literature peer review
Hello. I've noticed that you have an interest in literature (specifically, poetry), and that is why I am leaving you a message. I have recently entirely rewritten the Turkish literature article with a view to getting it up to Featured Article status, and have placed the article up for peer review. If you could possibly take the time to look at and review the article, I would greatly appreciate it. If not, thank you for taking the time to read this message. Saposcat 10:22, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Poetry Project
Thanks for the welcome to the poetry project. My areas of interest are pretty broad, I suppose: obviously Turkish poetry (which, by the way, is fairly woefully represented on Wikipedia at the moment—something I hope to have a hand in correcting), but also French poetry of the 19th and 20th centuries (currently I'm hoping to expand, in particular, on Henri Michaux, a particular favorite), poetic form(s), and probably some other random stuff as well.
As for what I'd like to see the project achieve, I think one of its most noble goals (if you will) is one that, as far as I can tell, it already has: structural standardization of poetry-related articles. Besides that, I haven't thought about it too much, but of course I'll let you know if anything comes to mind.
Also, thanks for the quick response (and compliments) about the Turkish literature article. I realize its length is probably a bit excessive, but (as I said on its talk page and also on its peer review), until such time as the offshoot articles get expanded upon (another pet project of mine), it's about the only detailed thing going in the way of Turkish literature on Wikipedia; hence, it's really long (though still just under that 50KB upper limit).
Thanks again. Saposcat 12:02, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Junstin Clemens
"Seems like a vanity page ... notability is not clearly established. Same user added a reference to Clemens' book in the article Sonnet and some misspelt nonsense on the page of the genuinely notable John Forbes, which amounted to vandalism (which is how I ended up here) and is clearly not a good sign in terms of the article under discussion here." Inconsistant, these are porbaly UK/US centred wikipedians. There was already an article on John Forbes and Justin Clemens is no less notable.Myrtone (the strict Australian wikipedian):-(
"Anyhow, I'm not the right person to engage in that particlar discussion, as I am biased: I was a friend of John's from the early 90's up to his death." Maybe you have already found the right person bacause my father has known Justin Clemens from Melbourne Universiy. And especially given that you admitted your biasm, I will maintian that you are inconsistant as I have critisised the policy as favour UK/US biographies over Australian ones (Wikipedia started in America and so did its policies)Myrtone (the strict Australian wikipedian):-o
"I see an anon user (with an IP in Virginia USA) removed the Justin Clemens sentence from the article" Well their IP is in the US their their policys on notabiliy maybe UK/US centred, a real worry. It seems that the wikipedians going against references to Justin Clemens are all non-Australin wikipedians and I cannot guarantee that their policies are not UK/US centredMyrtone (the strict Australian wikipedian):-o

I've put the Poetry article up as a Featured Article Candidate, and one of the comments was that more cites and references are needed. [edit] Scriabin
Hi. I'm the user who added the derogatory comment about Scriabin's comparison with Stravinsky and Schoenberg. I now have a user name: Atavi. I only just saw that you reverted the changes I had made and your rationale, since not having an account I couldn't watch pages.
All in all, I agree that the comment is unnecessary, but only to who are familiar with all three composers. I suppose POV means "point of view". I disagree that it is a point of view. I understand that Schoenberg is widely recognised as one of the most important composers of the 20th century and Stravinsky is also quite important, if only for his Rite of Spring. On the other hand I dare say that Scriabin is a minor composer. What I think is that I am pointing out a 20th century analogue of a Baroque, Alessandro Scarlatti (or even J.S. Bach as far as Schoenberg goes) versus Tommaso Redi (I hope I am not doing an injustice to Redi by comparing him to Scriabin) distinction. This might be useful for those who are not familiar with the work of all composers involved.

[edit] Quality storyboard
Thank you for catching the PDSA article link. I didn't notice that the link didn't lead to the Shewhart cycle article. PDSA should have a redirect to PDCA, Shewhart cycle, Deming cycle. I am new to Wikipedia and don't know how to work with redirects. There is a difference between PDSA and PDCA. Study is used to maintain the original intent of Dr. Shewhart in the cycle being a learning method based on the Scientific Method. Check implies only that the desired results occurred and that potential learning may be overlooked. The origin of Shewhart's concept is in epistemology and the work of C. I. Lewis. Shewhart was presenting a theory of knowledge. The Shewhart cycle article doesn't cover these issues and needs some work. There are some issues on OR as the history of the differences has not had much coverage. Shewhart never used PDCA which seems to have originated in Japan in the 1950s/1960s. Shewhart did not use PDSA. Deming insisted on PDSA as opposed to PDCA to focus on Shewhart's original intent of learning. To add to the confusion some call the cycle the Deming cycle. Deming never used that term as he always called it the Shewhart cycle. Leaders100 20:14, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Callow et alt.
I don't have Callow, Erickson, Gayford - and Arnold (I guess reference is to Wilfried N. - not to Matthias). I have the German translation of Wilfried N. differing in pagination, but I'll get along, if my guess is right. (Is this English, probably not!) Anyway, I would propose links to a letter, if information comes from such a unique, identifiable source. On the other hand, links to an author or an individual opinion should refer to a book or an essay.
In the VG timeline I've already fixed those links, where the source was obvious. For the rest, I count on your support.
In the main text it's much more difficult for me, to verify the sources, and probably more important in the end, to see if they are valid. This applies especially to Ken Wilkie: Not one source is given, though it's easy to show that his "interviews" mainly recall information published years and decades before, and his further "discoveries" have been toned down in serious recent publications. Wilkie is a journalist, sex & crime are his business - I wasted much time with people like him.
You see it's good that you are back. And by the way, your VG-template is brilliant. --R.P.D. 20:08, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Stumps, those quotes you added (by Porter and Geoffrey Hill) really smacked some sense into me--exactly the advice I needed-- So what led you to add these two quotes on the same subject? AdamBiswanger1 20:39, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds interesting. Can you provide the link? Tyrenius 03:41, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
Thanks. I've done some work on poetry, including Liverpool poets, The Medway Poets, The Mersey Sound and T. S. Eliot. You might be interested in liaising with User:Poetlister if you're not in touch already. Tyrenius 06:15, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Herbert translations
Thanks for your message. If you have any reference to the Milosz' translations, please let me know. AFAIK, the Miłosz and Herbert were conflicted for years, so it would be very interesting to have a source for that work (and the deleted line would became significant!). Best, --Beaumont 11:45, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- Great job, thanks! BTW, when I find some sources I'll try to add Miłosz-Herbert controversy. AFAIK it started after 1989, so I should not have been so suspicious about the translations. Best Beaumont 13:04, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] "Minor" and "major" writers
My thanks for your good work in reverting edits made today by Uberall. You may be interested in my exchange with this user at Talk:Karen Connelly.Victoriagirl 16:50, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
- I, too, have come to suspect that User:Uberall and User:AnthonyHead are one and the same. Whether one person or two, the intent seems fairly obvious: an attack on Connelly (and Aritha van Herk, for that matter). I must add that the controversy over the Governor General's Award doesn't ring true. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled. Victoriagirl 04:16, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
Moi aussi. Merci beaucoup pour le message. Tyrenius 11:36, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Karen Connelly - Aritha van Herk connection
I've just left a message with Tyrenius noting his recent edit to Karen Connelly. I've edited Aritha van Herk for the very same reasons. You'll note that the passages I deleted were written by User:Uberall. Thought you'd like to know. Victoriagirl 17:56, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Footnote problem
For a short-term solution, add ?action=purge to the URL and reload. See this discussion. A purge creates a new cached copy of the article on the WP servers, see WP:PURGE. Gimmetrow 09:32, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
- The problem "went away" because I forced a "purge" on the page as described above. Gimmetrow 09:38, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Poetry portal
Hey stumps. Any idea what is going on with the poetry portal? The columns are out of wack, which is a bit of a problem considering I plan to nominate it for featured status soon. If you could help me out that would be great (I'm an idiot when it comes to formatting) AdamBiswanger1 20:31, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks Stumps, you're the best. Look for the portal to be nominated for featured status in the coming future, maybe even today. AdamBiswanger1 22:16, 3 September 2006 (UTC)
- Not to pester you, but your vote of approval at Featured Portal Candidates would probably put the Poetry Portal over the top. For whatever reason featured portal candidates receives minimal attention and it is difficult to reach a concensus. AdamBiswanger1R.I.P. Steve Irwin 16:11, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: MoMA links on van Gogh page
I appreciate your thoughtful comments on the appropriateness of the MoMA links on the van Gogh page and how I might best be able to contribute quality material to the site. Thanks! Jmaldonado 02:43, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the tips and telling me what I was doing wrong in Wikipedia. By the way, how do I add those things in the right side of my user page? Liist 22:31, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Question
Hey, I noticed you posted the following question on the talk page of a copyright article: "from http://www.wurzergallery.com/artist/muller.html. I'm not sure of the procedure yet." The way to do it is add {{db-copyvio|(URL of the original material that was copied)}}, which, in this case would have been {{db-copyvio|http://www.wurzergallery.com/artist/muller.html)}}. You can read more about speedy deletion and copyright violations here. Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 07:20, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
- I deleted the article as a copyvio. Please let me know if you spot any more. Tyrenius 13:00, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] American punctuation
Re: your puzzlement by the summary of my recent edit to Melbourne
According to this putting punctuation marks within inverted commas when they are not part of the quote is the American style. It's interesting that you write that you are "pretty sure that at least in older editions of the Australian government Style Manual it was specified that commas should go inside the quotes." I'm not aware of any non-American style guides ever to recommend this ... however, I'm not exactly the World's leading expert on style guides.
You write that you "too happen to prefer the comma outside". That makes three of us: you, I and Wikipedia's Manual of Style. You write that "it seems more logical". It is more logical ... it's logical whereas the alternative is not. This, as far as I can make out, is why Manual of Style along with most of the World minus the USA (or so I thought) prefers it.
You write that "The labelling of this style of punctuation as 'American' also struck" you "as a bit antagonistic." All right, fair call. In future edit summaries I'll refrain from labelling it as such. Instead I'll just do what I usually do and either mark the edit as minor (which it really is) or not that I'm editing to comply with Wikipedia's Manual of Style. --Jimp 05:45, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Re: You thank me for the detailed reply.
No worries. You mention going back home. I too am away (Japan). Where are you now? (If you don't mind my asking.) --Jimp 08:21, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Herbert
Thaks for your message. Yes, these are words of Herbert; once he gave a talk at an "Odra" meeting. Then the text was included as a preface to a volume of his poetry ("golden hardback edition" by Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy, one of major Polish editors).
With the PL template you could be interested in the original text. I'll post it here as soon as I'm back home. I included my own translation (should I mention it in that case as editor's translation?). Feel free to adjust the text (translation wasn't so evident, you'll see!) and, if you find it useful, to improve the description of the source. Best, Beaumont 11:26, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Gerald Murnane
I've removed the 2006 Nobel reference from Gerald Murnane's page as he didn't win and the nomination was not "official". Jenny Sinclair 11:31, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Paul Sérusier
Hi, I moved Paul Sérusier to where it should be, but I discovered a bigger problem: the article seems to be a copyvio from [1], which doesn't look like a Wikipedia mirror. Since you seem knowledgeable about the area, you might be interesting in rewriting the article from scratch and attributing the sources properly or resolving the situation anyway. Regards, Duja 09:42, 13 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Romanization of Cyrillic
I'm undecided on what romanization and what phonetics are necessary. Initially, I argued that because the article title was likely to be a common romanization, it would be useful to have a standard one (I was using the UN one) after the Cyrillic transcription, but someone's gone round quite a few of my articles and removed it. I can understand the argument that it just clutters the article, and you're only likely to read the standard romanization if you can read Cyrillic in the first place, therefore rendering it unnecessary. So perhaps the romanization can go, except in cases where the title is not a romanization of any sort, e.g. "Ural Mountains" or something. As for IPA, I don't know how to enter IPA, so I've never been able to edit any of those. I can read IPA for languages with which I'm familiar, but I wouldn't be much help on Russian, I'm afraid. What do you think about abandoning standard romanization altogether? DTOx 03:37, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] John Milton
No, I actually semiprotected it (I'm an admin). NawlinWiki 15:29, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Munch
I think if you've removed/rewritten any copyvio material, that should be OK now, but I'm not an expert on it, so check with someone else if you want. Tyrenius 15:34, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Blank Verse
I notice you reverted my intro essay on blank verse. True, it strayed off the definition. Guilty! But is the reversion much better? Notice all the history still in the intro. Anyway, be that as it may, it stung me that you mocked my reference to an English department document. Since when is a university publication — conveniently online — invalid? Perhaps my style of citation is too busy (again, guilty!), but cite we must, otherwise this Wikipedia can easily degenerate into a forum for lame or loony opinions. But maybe the standard footnotes, which make the text so choppy, can be replaced with something more graceful. Suggestions? — Jrmccall 22:29, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
- See my talk page for a reply to your reply there. — Jrmccall 23:36, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hugh Selwyn Mauberley
Thanks for fixing up the work I did on the page. I tried to clean it up at least a little because I think it's a great poem and deserved a better treatment than it already had, but I was in a rush and obviously made some mistakes. I plan on adding more information about the poem when I get the chance, though. Think that's justifiable?
[edit] Vincent
Hi, I was for a while busy with other things. Today, when I had a look on the van Gogh-page, I was astonished to find a lacuna for the decisive months in his biographhy: the Borinage episode. I am not sure whether this was never part of the biography, or was it deleted and not restored? --RPD 18:02, 24 November 2006 (UTC)
Well done, but don't you think that it would be time to protect this very long page which is almost every day the aim of vandalism, at least against revisions from users not locked in? --RPD 19:44, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Proposed deletion notice
[edit] Johanna van Gogh-Bonger
I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and "Wikipedia is not for things made up in school one day"). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. [edit] newcastle
given that the first thing i thgt was what do i know about newcaste on tyne? no i can't help much on that one:) checked the newc. council website, nothing. i've had this prob with a few other prizes, i guess they just forget to do their publicity properly. (i noticed on their site, at least as far as i cld see, they don't even say exactly what it's for) the only thing that just occured to me then was emailing them directly, might try this sometime. good luck w/ it.
fwiw the d o b thing might actualy be on the living bio guidelines. it's not encouraged for living people as its considered private info. tho its almost trivial... ⇒ bsnowball 14:52, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Jump right in if you've got time!
You asked on my Talk page:
- I've finally got around to seeing your suggestion on the Poetry project about refining stubs, and have posted some ideas there. Are you going to proceed with this, or should I make a start? Stumps 08:42, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
I just started a full-time job (while continuing my part-time one), so I'm unlikely to have the time for Wikipedia that I had in previous months. If you've got ideas, by all means, go for it; if you'll leave me a note after you create some stubs, I'll try to work on it from time to time when I get the itch to do some wikiwork. :) Lawikitejana 03:49, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Zum schwarzen Ferkel
When I noticed you editing Dagny Juel and creating an article on Adolf Paul yesterday, I hurried to post an old sketch for an article on Zum schwarzen Ferkel, in order not to let you beat me to it. :-)
I know some names are still missing, such as Bengt Lidforss, but I wanted to work them into the narrative rather than just making a list. Anyway, if you can add anything, you are welcome to do so. Everything I now have there is from the two articles + captions in the referenced Exhibition catalogue, but I haven't yet put in footnotes. Upp◦land 21:16, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Pre-Columbian what-have-you
Hi. I see you reverted my change of 'aka' in one of the headings of Pre-Columbian trans-oceanic contact. I must admit I didn't check to see if it was directly linked from elsewhere; apologies if that was the nature of the gaffe. Assuming otherwise, I'd like to explain the rationale of my change a little more clearly than my admittedly rather glib edit summary did: I felt that 'aka' was a little too colloquial, and possibly not entirely clear to all readers ... Wiktionary, for example, gives the correct usage as A.K.A. which would be clearer, but I still feel it is not necessary to use this abbreviation at all, bearing in mind that we should of course explain jargon, even where (or perhaps especially where) the jargon is incidental to the topic of the article. I had thought 'and' was an adequate alternative as it is indeed only a hypothesis that the two names refer to the same person, but other possibilities include the full 'also known as' or perhaps the word 'alias'. Quoting from WP:BETTER#Think_of_the_reader ... "Wikipedia is an international encyclopedia. The people who read it have different backgrounds, education and worldview from you. Try to make your article accessible to as many of them as possible." I'd be interested to know your thoughts on this. Stumps 14:14, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hey, sorry, I entirely missed your comment from several weeks back. I hadn't meant to revert your "and" back to "aka", I only meant to remove a randomly-inserted "C.E." I'm not sure what happened. You're quite right, I don't think "A.K.A." or any variant should be used; it's not very encyclopedic and potentially confusing. I changed it to and. Thanks for pointing it out, it's the little things that make the difference!--Cúchullain t/c 22:28, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
