[edit] History
The airport was established in 1939, replacing the old airport in Böblingen. In 1945 the US Air Force took over the airport; it still maintains a base on the southern side of the airport. In 1948 the airport was returned to the German authorities.
The airport was extended after World War II; the airstrip was extended to 1800m in 1948, then to 2250m in 1961 and finally to 3345m in 1996.
After the replacement of the old 1938 terminal was finally finished in 2004, there are four terminals to service passengers with a maximum capacity of approximately 12 million passengers.
[edit] Public transportation and access
Stuttgart Airport can be easily reached within 30 minutes from the city's main train station using the S-Bahn S2 or S3. The airport is located right next to the Autobahn A8 that connects the cities of Karlsruhe, Stuttgart and Munich.
