Stunning Spell

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the fictional universe portrayed in the Harry Potter books, a stunning spell is a spell which stuns the fighter's opponent. A person hit by a stunning spell is said be "Stunned" (following the name of the spell) and "Stupified" (following the incantation of the spell).

The incantation used to make the spell work is "Stupefy". The spell shoots in a straight line and is coloured red. It is a very useful spell, used by Harry Potter many times. The spell is often used during duels. Also, the handlers of large animals use the spell to subdue their creatures.

A Stunned person may be revived by a counter-spell of an unknown name. Its incantation is "Enervate" in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but becomes "Rennervate" in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

The spell was seen being used prior to the first task of the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Dragon handlers used the stunning spell, with limited effectiveness, to subdue the dragons they were dealing with.

Viktor Krum was stunned by Bartemius Crouch Sr under the Imperius curse of Bartemius Crouch Jr in the latter half of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Professor Minerva McGonagall, on the order of Dolores Umbridge, was hit by four stunning spells at once and had to be taken to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.

Later during the battle in the Department of Mysteries, the stunning spell was used quite often as Harry Potter and his friends battled Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters.
