Students' Association of the University of Adelaide

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The SAUA (Students' Association of the University of Adelaide) is the peak representative body for students at the University of Adelaide. It is one of a number of student organisations at the university affiliated to and funded by the Adelaide University Union. The SAUA has been in existence and functioned as the representative student organisation since 1973. Prior to that time a Student Representative Council had been representing students at the university.

The SAUA has representative members on many of the University of Adelaide's committees to give opinions and advice to university academics and administrations from a student's point of view. In addition to this it gives comment in the media and makes submissions to government inquiries about issues that affect student and young people in general. The SAUA also regularly runs events and campaigns on campus to raise awareness about issues such as gender-based discrimination, student poverty, exploitation of young people in the workplace and the environment.

The SAUA runs annual elections to elect students to its various office-bearer positions as well as positions on the governing council.

The current president of the Students' Association is Rhiannon Newman, who is factionally non-aligned but usually assumes positions consistent to those held by the National Labor Students faction. The other officer bearers of the Students' Association are:

  • Education Vice-President- Chris Kelly
  • Women's Vice-President- Tara Bates
  • Activities Officer- Kate Walsh
  • Environment Officer- Matthew Allen
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Officer- Natasha Walsh
  • Equity and Welfare Officer- Rhiannon Newman
  • Male Sexuality Officer- David Wilkins
  • Female Sexuality Officer- Currently Vacant
  • Orientation Coordinator- Alexandra Barratt

General Councillors (ten positions)

  • Aaron Hill
  • Jessica Tucker
  • Matthew Taylor
  • Monica Dimasi
  • William (Bill) Fuller
  • (Dilan) Ganga Moragolle

The SAUA is a member of the National Union of Students of Australia.

The Students' Association is an autonomous affiliate of the Adelaide University Union.

It has been suggested that the SAUA wind up and allow the AUU to undertake it's representative functions, though no decision has yet been made about the future of the organisation.
