Stuart Patrick Jude Zender was born on 18 March 1974 in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. Raised in Philadelphia, he is a bass guitarist, songwriter and music producer. He is best known for being the original bass player in the acclaimed British funk band Jamiroquai. He played on their first three albums: Emergency on Planet Earth, The Return of the Space Cowboy and Travelling Without Moving.
Zender left Jamiroquai during recording of their fourth album Synkronized because of conflicts with lead singer Jay Kay. The circumstances behind his departure have never been fully revealed, but Stuart explained that he felt that he (and other band members) were not being fairly compensated financially, and were not being credited for assisting in songwriting. He also stated that he tendered his resignation to spend more time with his budding family. Stuart was replaced by Nick Fyffe, who left Jamiroquai in 2003.
After Jamiroquai, Zender worked with numerous artists, including All Saints, Omar, Lauryn Hill, Gorillaz, Ms. Dynamite and many others. He also dated singer Melanie Blatt of former UK girl group All Saints. The two were together for seven years. Together they have one daughter Lilyella.
Zender is currently preparing to launch his own band, Leroi, on Geffen records.
