Stuart S. Murray

Admiral Stuart S. Murray (18981980) was born in Santa Barbara, California and graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1919. In the 1920s, he was involved in constructing the submarine base at Pearl Harbor.

A former submariner, he took command of the USS Missouri (BB-63) in May of 1945 and was the commanding officer during the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender on 2 September 1945.

A large man who was a friend and classmate of the previous commanding officer, Captain William M. Callaghan, Murray was nicknamed "Sunshine" and "the Gentle Giant." Captain Murray was well-liked by his crew.

Before his retirement, Admiral Murray was the commander of submarines for the Atlantic in the 1950s.
