[edit] Policy says "replace" fair use images, not "delete without replacement"

I understand the benefits of moving Wikipedia toward completely free images. However, requiring editors to take their own photos of artists and public figures seems like a bad place to start: it's considerably more burdensome than having people create their own diagrams or photograph objects -- I would have to travel to Scotland to photograph Stuart Murdoch! And publicity photos are made available specifically to be used in this way.

Wikipedia's fair use policy says "If you see a fair use image and know of an alternative more free equivalent, please replace it."

This is not the same as "Delete fair use images and leave pages with no image until you can find a replacement." I'll be delighted to replace the image when a free one when one is available, but until that happens, fair use is better for Wikipedia than nothing at all.

You should discuss the policy at the policy's talk page. If you don't disagree this image is replaceable, you shouldn't add the disputed tag. I'm removing it for good. --Abu Badali 00:57, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
By the way, the policy says we can only use unfree material when "No free equivalent is available or could be created". --Abu Badali 00:57, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
I am not disputing the policy, I am disputing that it applies to this image.
The policy says:
"If unfree material can be transformed into free material, it should be done instead of using a "fair use" defense. [...] Neither photographs nor sound clips, however, can usually be "transformed" in this way. However, if the subject of the photograph still exists, a freely-licensed photograph could be taken.
Stuart Murdoch does still exist. However, it is not possible for me to photograph him. And the policy immediately goes on to say:
Always use a more free alternative if one is available. If you see a fair use image and know of an alternative more free equivalent, please replace it.
I do not know of an "alternative more free equivalent." If you do, then please go ahead and replace the fair use image. If you do not, then the policy as written does not require this image's deletion.

It may "not possible for you to photograph him" but it probablyis for a lot of people, what makes this image replaceable. And the policy does requires replaceable to be removed. As I mentioned before, we can only use unfree images when "No free equivalent is available or could be created". In this case, a free image could be created (if not by you, by someone else). In general, images of living people are replaceable, and should not stay. --Abu Badali 08:10, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
