Strelitziaceae is a botanical name for a family of flowering plants. Such a family has not been recognized by very many taxonomists: the plants in this family have been included in the banana family Musaceae, because of a similarity in the appearance of the leaves and in growth pattern.
The APG II system, of 2003 (unchanged from the APG system, 1998), does recognize this family, and assigns it to the order Zingiberales in the clade commelinids in the monocots. The family includes three genera, totalling seven species.
The best known species is the bird-of-paradise flower Strelitzia reginae grown worldwide in tropical and subtropical gardens, and a well known flower in floristry. The other species in the South African genus Strelitzia are less appealing, as the flowers do not have these striking colors.
Another famous species is the travellers palm (Ravenala madagascariensis).
Not sharing in this fame is the South American Phenakospermum guyanense.
