Stratford Central Secondary School is one of three high schools located in Stratford, Ontario. The other two being Stratford Northwestern and St. Michael's. Of these three schools, Central is the smallest in enrollment. The school is extremely academically-minded, but is also able to compete in sports. The Rams boast competitive basketball, volleyball and badminton teams within Western Ontario, with their Senior Boy's basketball competing in WOSSAA for several years, and claiming an OFSAA berth in March 2006. The basketball team brings many fans from current students as well as alumni for games they play at home as well as on the road. Central also has a very competitive swimming team, sending many of the members to compete against Ontario's best in individual as well as team competition. Central also has a large music program, which includes five bands. The bands include: Junior Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and the Marching Band. The music program is well known for their performances and compete both across Ontario and worldwide. SCSS is also a very art-orientated school offering visual arts, music, dance, and drama. Students also have the opportunity to join the arts clubs which are TheatreCentral, Dancentral, Cartoon and Comics Club, Photography club, as well as the bands.
In 2004, King Lear Senior Public School and Juliet Publics School were closed and shutdown, thus introducing Stratford Central and Stratford Northwestern to a grade 7 and 8 program to the schools, called Stratford Central Public School and Stratford Northwestern Public School, respectively. SCPS has its own principal (but the same vice-principal as the secondary section), as well as administration. The grade 7 and 8 students shared the building but were in no way the same school, and ran independently having assemblies and school spirit events separate.
A number of highschools in the area also look to Central's Rams Radio to be disc jockeys for school events and dances. This is a student run club that is now widely known around Southwestern Ontario.
