Stratford is a village in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Wausau, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,523 at the 2000 census.

Stratford is located at 44°48′7″N, 90°4′26″W (44.801971, -90.073829)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 13.8 km² (5.3 mi²). 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.75%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,523 people, 603 households, and 413 families residing in the village. The population density was 110.9/km² (287.6/mi²). There were 648 housing units at an average density of 47.2/km² (122.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.16% White, 0.39% Native American, 1.18% Asian, and 0.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.98% of the population.

There were 603 households out of which 34.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 19.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $42,569, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $31,793 versus $23,352 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,934. About 4.6% of families and 6.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.4% of those under age 18 and 12.2% of those age 65 or over.

Beginning in 1930, the Stratford Woman’s Club volunteered their time cataloging books and working in the library which was housed first in the Knights of Columbus Hall and later in the back of the post office. In 1947, the library was moved to the Village Council Chambers where it remained until construction of the new library in 1995.

The first story hours were held in 1947 and best sellers were rented out for 10 cents per week in 1948. The Stratford Library joined the Marathon County Library in 1949, and in 1973 became became a branch of the newly formed Marathon County Public Library when the Wausau Public Library and Marathon County Library merged. It has been a popular service for area residents since its beginnings.
