Stradbroke Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stradbroke Island also known as Minjerribah was a large sand island in Moreton Bay near Brisbane, Queensland. A particularly severe storm in 1896 made a permanent breach in the island which is now two quite separate islands.
- North Stradbroke Island is the larger of the two, about 38 km long and 11 km wide.
- South Stradbroke Island is about 22 km long and 2 km wide.
North Stradbroke is the more developed of the two islands.
Ferries and water taxis leave Brisbane regulary that travel to the North Stradbroke. The ferries allow you to transport your car, the water taxis are faster and cheaper but only take people. Once you arrive at North Stradbroke you can travel to the other side of the island by bus to Point Lookout. A small town with vacation rentals, beaches and cafes.
Popular activities include whale watching, hiking, surfing and fishing.
