The 2006 Long Island Sound Plane Crash was an incident that occured when a Learjet owned by televangelist Pat Robertson plunged off the coast of Connecticut on June 2, 2006. Pat Roberston was not onboard the aircraft when it crashed. Although the exact cause of the crash was unknown, officials suggested that heavy fog may have been to blame. The crash killed the pilots of the downed plane and all three passengers sustained minor injuries.
[edit] The Event
The Learjet took off from Norfolk, Virginia and made a brief stop in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Plane then countinued on towards its destination in Connecticut which was a golf tournament. [2] [3] At an 2:30 PM (EST), the plane hit an approch light and crashed in the water. According to news paper reports, the plane sank in 4-8 ft of water. [4] Seconds after the crash, nearby residents and fishermen who heard the crash quickly came to the scene of the accident. Later the United States Coast Guard arrived to rescue the passengers and crew of the downed plane. The Coast Guard managed to pull out all three passengers and the bodies of the two pilots. [3]
[edit] Aftermath and Investigation
The names of the passengers and crew were not relased immediately after the crash and the pilots of the crashed plane were from Virginia. [5] Two of the surivors of the crash were released from the hospital while the third was kept overnight. Officials creditited their survival to the warm water which was at 60 degrees at the time of the crash. During the following investigation, authouries suggested that heavy fog played a role in the crash since that was the cause of a similar plane crash in June 2005. [4] In addition, one of surivors told reporters that the plane approched the runway at a lower altitude than usual. Then the survior later said that the plane made an abrupt climb before hitting the approch light and crashing into the water. [6] Later a NTSB report ruled out mechanical failure as the cause of the crash. [7] After the crash, the plane was salvaged out of the water and the debris and fuel that spilled out of the plane was quickly cleaned up to prevent a boating and swimming hazard. [8]

[edit] Event
At an unknown time, the plane took off from Purdue University Airport bound for Bloomington. At 11:40 pm (cst), the plane dissapeared from radar. A search by police and fire rescue found the wreckage of the plane 500 yards south of the airport at 4:15 am (cst). [9]
[edit] Investigation
The FAA investigated the crash and although there was heavy fog present at the time of the accident, an exact cause was determine unknown because the plane did not carry a cockpit voice recorder and the last report from the pilot before the crash was at 11:37 pm. In addition, there was no distress calls. However, several nearby residents reported a low flying plane with a sputtering engine. One eyewitness reported that the speed of the plane accelerated while attempting to land. [10] [11] A medical investigation determined that all five of the students died instantly from trama. [12] In addition, investigators began looking at the pilots experience and flight records, theorizing that inexprience caused the crash. [13]
[edit] Aftermath
After the crash, a concert held in nearby Lafayette was cancelled. [14] On April 25, 2006 a concert held at the Indiana University Musical Art Center was dedicated in memory of the crash victims. [12] In additon, a car crash that killed four Taylor University students and one employee occured a week after the plane crash. [15]

The 2002 Tampa Plane Crash was an incident that occured on January 5, 2002. The incident occurred when a high school student stole a Cessna 172 and crashed it into the side of an Bank of America office building. The impact killed the teenager and damaged the office room. There were no injuries since this occurred when few people were in the building.
[edit] Event
At 5 p.m (est), the 15 year old reportedly stole the small aircraft. As soon the plane took off the air traffic controllers alerted the United States Coast Guard and the United States Airforce. Despite repeated warnings from a helicopter sent by the coast guard the small plane continued on untill it collided with an office building. The plane crashed between the 23rd and 24th floors of the building. [16] [17]
[edit] The Pilot
The pilot of the crashed plane was a 15 year old high school student from Tarpon Springs, Florida. Before the incident, the teen was authroized to do a pre-flight check but not to get in an aircraft alone. [16] After the crash, investigators discovered that the teen had a troubled past. [18]
[edit] Investigation and Aftermath
Investgation followed after the incident. Officials ruled out terrorism although eye witnesses said that the plane made no apparent attempt to avoid hitting the building. Officials finally suggested that the crash was an apparent sucide. In addtion, a note found in the wreckage stated that he voiced support for Osama Bin Laden. However, there is no evidence that the teen had any connection with any terror group. Later authories confiscated a computer from the teen house to figure out what motive was involved in the incident. Moments after the incident, President George W. Bush was briefly informed about the incident and two unrelated crashes that same day. [17]
In April 2002 transcripts obtained from the Federal Aviation Administration revealed new details about the incident, which included how close the small plane came to a Southwest Airlines Flight.[19]
The teen's mother filed a $70 million dollar (2002 USD) lawsuit against Roche Laboratories, who makes an acne medicin called Accutane. According to the lawsuit claim the medicin had side effects such as depression and suicidal actions, which the claim stated as the cause of the incident. [18]
After the incident took place, numerous security measures were taken plane. The FAA realised a security notice on January 6, days after the incident. The noticed included securtiy of the aircraft and regulations pretaining to underaged flight students. In addtion the EAA and other smaller aircraft organizations proposed more security of flight schools and small aircraft. [20] [21]

The Milan Plane Crash took place on 11:00 am (EDT, 5:48 pm in Italy) on April 18, 2002. The crash happened when a Rockwell Commander A112 crashed into the upper floors of the Pirelli Tower. The crash killed the pilot and four others in the building. Sixty more people sustained injuries in the building and on the ground.
The crash aroused fears of another terrorist attack because of the crash similarity to the September 11th attacks. However, an investigation that took place after the crash ruled out terrorism and stated that pilot error was to blame.
[edit] Event
The plane took off from Magadino Airport in Switzerland eighteen minutes before the crash. Later as the plane flew over Milan, Italy the pilot radioed to the control tower that he had a "small problem" with the landing gear on approch. The tower replied and told the pilot to maintain course. Despite this the pilot turned the plane northward and radioed back that he was trying to fix the landing gear, whereupon communication was lost. Minutes later, at 5:48 pm local time, the small plane crashed into the Pirelli Tower. Full of fuel, the plane immediately burst into fire, and debris from the crashed plane and the building fell to the street below, injuring several people. [16]
30–40 people were taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, while fire fighters contained the fire that resulted from the crash. Immediatly after the crash, a nearby train station and airport were shut down.[16]
[edit] Investigation
Italian officials conducted an investigation after the crash. It reveled in a transcript that the pilot asked permission to land because of the trouble with the landing gear. In addtion the report stated that the pilot misheard the airports response to hold posistion and insted turned the plane northward. Later, the reported further stated that the pilot ether suddenly fell ill or there was a small fire in the cockpit causing him to lose control of the plane. After the investigation, officials concluded that the crash was an accident and it ruled out any act of terrorism or suicide.[22]
[edit] Aftermath
The crash aroused fears of another terrorist attack since it occured seven months after the September 11th attacks. Because of this, stock markets around the United States and Europe fell sharply and business trading in Milan was suspended. The fears were abaded when investigators concluded that the crash was not the act of terrorism. [23] [24]
