The Florida Hurricane of 1948 was the eigth and final hurricane of the 1948 Atlantic hurricane season and the final major hurricane of the 1948 season. The Florida Hurricane was also one of two hurricanes to make Florida landfall during the 1948 season, making landfall southwest of Miami before curving northeastward and dissapating in the mid Atlantic, the hurricane killed ten people and left $12 million dollars in damage.

[edit] Storm history
A tropical wave was detected moving though the Leeward Islands on September 14, the developing system strengthened where it became a tropical storm east of Jamaica on September 18. The tropical storm moved slowly westward and then turned northwest where it became a category 2 hurricane before making landfall in Cuba on September 20. By the 21st, the hurricane moved across the Florida Straits, brushing the Florida Keys before making landfall east of Everglades City later that day. [1] The hurricane maintained category 1 status as it moved across south Florida on the 22nd. On September 23, the hurricane reintesified to a category status before moving to the northeast and becoming extratropical in the central North Atlantic on September 25. [1]

A destructive hurricane, the Florida Hurricane of 1948 left 10 people dead (all in Cuba) and $12 million dollars (1948 USD) in damage, most of the it in South Florida. Damage estimates from Cuba is unavaliable.

Several weather stations reported 90 mph winds and there was reports of damage in Havana and Matazanas although exact damage figures are unavaliable. [1]

A weather station in the Florida Keys recorded a barometric pressure reading of 963 millibars and 122 mph winds. About 3-5 inches of rain fell on the Florida Keys. [1] In South Florida, the hurricane produced up to 11 inches of rainfall and 90-95 winds, in addtion, weather officals reported the hurricane had two eyes before making landfall and there was also reports of lighting as far north as Orlando.
