[edit] Storm history
A tropical depression formed on July 13 east of the Windward Islands and moved westward across the Caribbean Sea. The depression then reached tropical storm status on August 17. Because storm tracking technology was primitive in 1909, the storm was undetected untill July 18, by that time it was already reached hurricane strength. [3][4]
The hurricane continued moving west-northwest before veering futher west where it rapidly reached category 3 strength. The hurricane then gradually weaknened to category 2 strength before making landfall 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Galveston, Texas (the storm center passed directly over the city of Velasco. [4][1]
