[edit] Community

The 200 year old town of Stowe is a rural area located forty miles from Vermont's largest city, Burlington. Stowe has a large mountain, the largest in Vermont in it. This mountain is called Mount Mansfield. The mountain brings in money to the town, causing part of Stowe to be a rich town.

[edit] History

Stowe Middle School was established before 1996. The school is not a school all by itself, it is attached to Stowe High School. It was built as an extension to the high school. Although rooms such as the 7th grade Science and Social Studies rooms and the 8th grade Science and math rooms are in the old building, they are still part of the middle school. The 6th grade is completely part of the extension.

Around 2002, there was a PIN system connected to the school's cafeteria. The schools cafeteria is shared with the high school, seeing as it is part of the old building. This also got installed in Stowe Elementary School.

[edit] Academics

The school is organized into grade-level teams for grades 6-8. Each team has a math teacher, social studies teacher and science teacher; all teachers teach language arts and reading across the curriculum. Students also have the choice of either French or Spanish. In addition to core classes, students also study living arts, life skills, art, technology education and physical education.

We believe Stowe Middle School is a special place where students are provided with a rigorous academic program in an environment that nurtures and supports young adolescents. [edit] Student activities

Students participate in a wide variety of extracurricular activities.

  • In 2006, the school's Odyssey of the Mind team placed high enough in the state tournament to go to Iowa for the national championships.
  • The yearbook committee is based mainly of 8th graders, but has made very sucessful yearbooks.
  • The band is "composed" of a large group of kids
  • The SMS jazz band is loved at concerts, and they do gigs at places in Stowe.

[edit] Athletics

Stowe Middle School has an outstanding sports program that includes soccer and field hockey in the fall and basketball in the winter. Some of our students have participated in regional track events and cross-country ski meets. During the winter months, our “Friday Program” gives students an opportunity to be part of a wellness program through activities such as snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, skating and swimming.
