Stookey Township, St. Clair County, Illinois

Stookey Township is a township located in Saint Clair County, Illinois. It is an unincorporated part of Belleville, Illinois located just west-northwest of downtown Belleville. Mostly residential homes and small businesses occupy the region along with occasional shopping centers (one is currently under construction and will be finished by December 2006). The township rides along Illinois highway route 13 and converges with Illinois Highway 15 and 159. Some of the largest residential areas include Hickory Lake, Hickory Village and several other presently unnamed subdivisions, one once being called Heritage Estates, which as since lost its name after participation in the neighborhood's home owner's association dropped in the early 1980s. The zipcode for the township is 62223. The telephone area code of the township is 618. The population of the township is around 2,150 making it a slightly less populated township compared to surrounding townships.

Transportation in and around of Stookey Township includes one "Metro-Link" light rail station (Memorial Station), and about two dozen "Metro-Bus" stops all around the Township. Metro-Bus is a subdivisional operation of the Metro-Link corporation. Several taxi companies can be contacted and requested within the township. The Illinois West-Central Railway also runs through the township in which supply and cargo freight trains run through at least a few times a day on the way to Chicago, IL, Saint Louis, MO, or East Saint Louis, IL. The closest airport to Stookey Township is the Mid-America Airport, which is about 12 miles to the east of the township. The closest major international airport is Lambert International which is west of Saint Louis, MO and it is about 25 miles away.

Stookey Township is served by Belleville School district 118, Harmony School District, Belleville Township High School district 201 and a few others, as well as a Catholic Private High School known a Altoff Catholic High School. The main public high school that serves the area is Belleville West High School which was in 2003 moved from its old location to a new building on Frank Scott Parkway West. EMGE, and West Jr. High serve as the middle schools for the township, along with signal hill, and several other elementary schools. As for secondary or higher education, Southwestern Illinois College and Lindenwood University (Belleville Campus, located at the old Belleville West Campus). Southwestern Illinois College is located near Scott Air Force Base, which is just east of the village of Shiloh, Illinois roughly 4.5 miles away. Saint Louis University is the Major Graduate school that is close to the township, but it's located in Missouri near Saint Louis so it's about 12 miles away.

Utility companies that work in the area are the Ameren UE Electric Company, the Illinois-American Water Company, Stookey Township Sewer, Belleville Sewage, and several public and privately owned trash collection companies are available to choose from. Since Stookey Township isn't official part of Belleville, it does not receive city trash service. Residents must contact a collection company to set up deals on trash collection. Citizens of Stookey also can't get library cards or check out books at Belleville libraries. No libraries exist so far in Stookey Township. Stookey township citizens are protected by Villa Hills volunteer fire department and the St. Clair County Sheriff, but Belleville city police do not have jurisdiction in Stookey Township.
