Stonewall Jackson Resort State Park
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stonewall Jackson Resort State Park is a state park along the shores of Stonewall Jackson Lake, an impoundment on the West Fork River. The lake is a project of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The resort is located in Lewis County, West Virginia, about 10 miles south of Weston and about three miles off the Roanoke Exit (Exit 96) of Interstate 79.
The lake was built for flood control purposes and was completed in 1990. The Army decided to not develop the lake as a traditional recreational venue, due to several other such lakes already in service in the area and offered it to the state. The state developed it into a spa and golf resort.
The lake is Stonewall Jackson Lake and was named for Confederate General Stonewall Jackson, who was born nearby. However the resort's name omits the "Jackson" and downplays the namesake, to avoid offending segments of the population.
The park is unlike a traditional state park in that it is operated as a commercial venture by Benchmark Hospitality. It features, in addition to the golf course and spa, a conference center, a hotel, cabins, rental houseboats and other recreational activities. The park was built by the state, but is supposed to operate without state subsidy. It has, thus far, failed to meet this goal and has threatened to close several times. Governor Joe Manchin has stated that he will not approve any further subsidies after 2007.
