STOPzilla

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

STOPzilla, a product of iS3, Inc., is an anti-Spyware software application for Microsoft Windows. It supports Internet Explorer versions 6.0 and later, and is typically purchased as an annual subscription. STOPzilla targets Adware and a broad spectrum of Malware (malicious software) programs that are non-viral in nature, including Spyware, Trojans, Phishing and Pharming attacks, Keyloggers, drive-by downloads, hijackers, dialers and Pop-ups. Developed in 2002, STOPzilla been installed on more than 10 million computers in 60 countries worldwide. STOPzilla researchers update the product as often as daily, based on new findings from the iS3 Research Laboratory.

Originally developed as a Pop-up blocker, STOPzilla’s developers noticed that the most effective Adware was delivered to users selectively, based upon their surfing habits and history. In order to block Pop-ups effectively, an application had to “kill” the monitoring software that guided it. Thus, even before the term “Spyware” entered the popular parlance, STOPzilla had developed Spyware-disabling techniques.

Its proprietary technology includes True-Real TimeTM Protection. Whereas many Spyware removal tools scan for malicious software periodically, STOPzilla was the first commercial anti-Spyware solution to begin scanning continuously, as soon as the user started the computer. Periodic scanning, even as often as every ten minutes, is ineffective against malicious intruders that perform their tasks within milliseconds. Establishing watchpoints in the system registry and continuously scanning for known and potentially malicious software has proven to be the most effective defense against Malware.

STOPzilla also features an anti-Phishing technology, which uses a combination of database analysis and advanced heuristics to warn users when they are about to visit a known or potential malicious Web site. STOPzilla is a sponsoring member of the Anti-Phishing Working Group.

STOPzilla has won numerous awards for technical excellence including the Laptop Magazine Editors’ Choice award[1] and the CNET Editors’ Choice award[2]. Subscription services include all product updates and upgrades and unlimited technical support via phone, live chat and e-mail.

STOPzilla requires a multimedia PC running Windows Version 2000 and later. Free trial versions of STOPzilla are available for download from the iS3 Web site.
