[edit] About
The brigade is based in a large urban centre with the main structure threats being housing, multi storey complexes, hotels, hospital, aged care facilities, shopping centres, communication facilities and major transport routes. The response area includes large areas of native vegetation, significant park areas, with semi rural residential living. The area has several class B structure risks, and two class A special risks, that is the S-E freeway (M1) and Adelaide-Melbourne railway. The brigade provides specialist roles in Road Crash Rescue and Hazmat that means regularly responding to incidents across the Mt Lofty CFS Group and into neighbouring Groups.
Stirling CFS attended 325 incidents in 2004/05, an increase over 2003/04 and this follows a long-term trend of increasing numbers of incidents. The most significant area of increase is around vehicle related incidents, with the continuing population growth in the hills area coupled with the M1 freeway between Glen Osmond and Crafers, bringing large increases in traffic volumes passing through the Stirling area.
Stirling brigade has a stable membership in excess of forty active fire fighters for the past decade, which has not required active recruitment. This level of membership is in line with the Standards of Fire and Emergency Cover (SFEC) prescription for the brigade and enables the brigade to crew all appliances as required for both local and Strike Team responses.
The brigade is classified as Urban/Rural under the SFEC, with Structural Threat in the top 5% (Policy 1) and Special Services Threat in the top 25% (Policy 3). Three appliances are prescribed where Structural Threat is in the top 5% (Policy 1). The SFEC system provides the basis to ensure CFS’s statutory obligations are met in the most efficient, effective and equitable manner.
