Steve Vickers (academia)

Steve Vickers is the author of the original Sinclair ZX Spectrum home computer ROM firmware. He is also a lecturer for the University of Birmingham, UK.

Steve graduated from King's College, Cambridge, gaining a degree in mathematics before doing his PhD at Leeds.
[edit] Sinclair Research
In 1980 he started working for Nine Tiles which had previously written the Sinclair BASIC for the ZX80. His first job was the adaptation of the 4K ZX80 ROM to make an 8K ROM for the ZX81, and also wrote the manual. He went on to write most of the ROM for the ZX Spectrum, as well as assisting with the user documentation.
Steve eventually left in 1982 to form "Rainbow Computing Co." with Richard Altwasser. The company became Jupiter Cantab and they were together responsible for the development of the largely unsuccessful Jupiter ACE, a competitor to the similar Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Originally at the Department of Computing at the Imperial College, Steve worked with the Theory and Formal Methods group. Steve later joined the Department of Pure Maths at the Open University before finally moving to the School of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham.
Steve is currently the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Programme Director for Electronic and Software Engineering (ESE) at Birmingham University. He is a full-time lecturer and professor and teaches First Year Software Workshop. Steve is a member of the Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science research group
Steve's main interest lies with geometric logic.
