Steve Murphy

For the past 14 years, it has been Steve Murphy's privilege to serve the people of our area in the Minnesota Senate. He considers his public service to be one of the greatest opportunities of his life and looks forward to working with many of you on issues of mutual concern: education, health care, transportation, rural economic development, public safety and agriculture.
Legislative Accomplishments
Over the past 14 years, Senator Murphy:
- has been elected and re-elected Majority Whip by his Senate colleagues
- helped reduce mandates to our higher education institutions
- obtained funding and land acquisition for the Goodhue Pioneer Trail
- obtained funding for the National Bald Eagle Center in Wabasha
- secured bonding money for the veterans homes in Hastings and Silver Bay, and for asset preservation dollars for homes across Minnesota
- authored and passed a biodiesel bill to boost Minnesota’s farm economy and reduce our dependence on foreign oil
- authored and carried ethanol initiatives for plants across Minnesota
- authored recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and civics education instruction in Minnesota schools
- supported a study to protect domestic and wild cervidae from Chronic Wasting disease;
- helped fix the unfair "Bread Tax" and "Sausage Tax" for local bakeries, butchers, hunters and others hurt by the 2001 Tax Bill.
- supported legislation to even the playing field for those who own Bed and Breakfast establishments
- promoted the Soldier and Sailor Act to benefit Minnesota’s veterans.
In addition, Senator Murphy is the chair of the Senate's Transportation Committee and the Transportation Finance Division. He is also a member of the Agriculture, Veterans, and Gaming Committee, the Capital Investment Committee, and the Finance Committee. He has also been appointed to several Workforce Development Councils by Senate leadership and the Governor.
