Steve McCarthy (born on February 3, 1981 in Trail, British Columbia) is a defenceman for the Atlanta Thrashers.
McCarthy was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks with the 23rd pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He made his debut in the 1999-2000 season and he recorded an assist on his first shift. After playing 134 games with the Blackhawks, he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks on August 22nd, 2005 in exchange for a 3rd round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He was then traded to the Atlanta Thrashers by the Vancouver Canucks for a conditional 4th round pick.
He was captain of Team Canada at the 2000 World Juniors.
