From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steve & Barry's University Sportswear is a national clothing chain targeted towards the sale of college apparel and lifestyle clothing that operates in the United States.

They also carry a huge variety of private label, casual clothing, including denim, business casual, active wear, outerwear, and T-shirts. Although they began as a company focused on college-licensed apparel, and carry sweatshirts, T-shirts and jackets featuring the logos of hundreds of colleges and universities, they also boast a wide range of “All-American” icons as well, such as Hershey’s, Tootsie Roll, Marvel Comics, Snap-on Tools, Trix cereal, Dubble Bubble, Ford Mustang, World Wrestling Entertainment as well as non-licensed products.

Recently, they launched the Starbury Collection. It is a 50-item line of lifestyle and athletic clothes and sneakers. It features the Starbury One, a basketball sneaker which sells for $14.98. The line was developed with NBA all-star Stephon Marbury of the New York Knicks, who has pledged to wear the sneakers during the 2006-2007 NBA season.

Steve & Barry's currently has over 150 stores in 33 different states and continue to expand, with a 200-store count as their goal for the end of 2006.

[edit] History

The Steve & Barry's chain was originally started in 1985 at the University of Pennsylvania. Offering discount prices on college apparel, the brand was able to expand to other college campuses across the country. In 1998, Steve & Barry's opened its first mall-based store just outside of Detroit, Michigan, and in 2000 began to offer lifestyle apparel along with college wear. Since then, the company has continued to expand its product offerings, with selection ranging from T-shirts, polos, jeans, and sweatshirts, to outwear, accessories, and bags.
