Sterculia quadrifida

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sterculia quadrifida is a peanut tree.

It is a small tree with a height of 5 -10 metres with a spreading deciduous canopy that grows across northern Australia in the tropics in monsoon forests, vine thickets and along waterways.

The bark is a light grey and the leaves are dark green broad egg shaped, sometimes heart-shaped at the base. This tree flowers from November to January and these are greenish-yellow that are borne in small clusters in the upper axils.

Seed pods are orange outside and orange or red inside when ripe. These pods contain up to 8 black seeds that are edible and taste like raw peanuts.
