Stephanie 'Steph' Josephine Hoyland (nee Scully) is a fictional character on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. She entered the series in 1999, originally played by Emma Roche, but replaced by Carla Bonner after only three weeks of filming (all scenes filmed with Roche were reshot with Bonner playing the part). Despite the departure of all three of her siblings and her parents, Steph remains a mainstay in the show.

Steph was once an apprentice mechanic, working at Lou's Garage with Stuart Parker. She rides a motorbike and has extensive knowledge on how to repair it. She is an avid fan of Australian rules football, and supports Richmond Football Club. She has also made a partial tour of the Australian outback.

[edit] History

[edit] Motorbike Accident

Libby Kennedy and Steph were involved in a motorbike accident that occurred in the middle of the night. An enraged Brendan Bell drove into the motorbike, and the three of them were taken to the hospital. Brendan died shortly afterwards, and Steph came out of it with torn ligaments. Libby's injuries were more severe, and it was said that she may never have children. Steph was the only person that actually blamed herself for what happened to Libby, and became severely depressed. As a result, she was having nightmares about the accident. Steph shortly afterwards threw out her biking leathers and announced that she was giving up her motorcycle.

[edit] Drew Kirk, Round One

At the same time Libby dumped Drew. Steph asked Libby about her decision, and Libby said it was none of her business. This caused them to both fall out. Steph and Drew grew closer, and she fell deeper in love with him. Because she knew nothing could become of it, she started ignoring him, and he eventually got married to Libby. After Libby had her son, Drew died when riding on a horse. The stress took its toll on Steph badly.

[edit] Marc Lambert

Marc was a wealthy man, whose parents took over the Lassiters' Hotel for a while. He was given the job of Assistant Manager. Steph and Marc were far from best of friends when they first met, but they eventually grew on each other and Steph started going out with him, and later got engaged. His mother kept trying to split them up by pretending she didn't like Steph, and Steph confronted her about it. At first Marc's mother, Chloe didn't tell her anything, but she eventually told her that she was trying to save Steph from Marc. Marc's mother explained that he didn't really love her, and he was trying to prove a point to his wealthy parents by wanting to marry her. Steph didn't believe this, and decided to go ahead with the marriage. While this was going on, Flick and Marc were getting closer, and this is what stopped the wedding, right at the altar. Steph and Marc haven't spoken since, but she had fallen out with Flick for a while but managed to patch things up with her before she left Erinsborough.

[edit] Max Hoyland

Soon after the Hoyland family became reunited in Erinsborough, Summer became very close friends with many people, namely Drew, then Stuart after Drew's death. When Summer became less attached to Stuart, she became more fixated on Steph, and pictured her as an ideal stepmother. Because of this she tried her best to get her father and Steph together. Eventually, they got together, but this caused quite a few arguments, especially with Boyd thinking Steph was trying to replace Claire, Max's first wife.

[edit] Breast Cancer, Round One

Just as things were starting to become more stable, she found a lump in her breast while tending to a sore area while working as an apprentice mechanic. Over a matter of days the lump was found to be cancerous, and it was removed. She tried her best to hide this from Max, but he eventually found out. This was a distressing time for Steph, especially with the arrival of Izzy, Max's sister. She tried to befriend Steph, but was making their friendship seem more unlikely each time she tried. She once offered Steph a wig while her hair began falling out as a side effect of the chemotherapy.

[edit] Marriage

After her first bout of breast cancer, Steph proposed to Max, and in 2004, Stephanie Scully became Stephanie Hoyland when she married Max.

[edit] Beginning of Pregnancy

In 2005, Steph finally got pregnant after it seemed this wouldn't be possible, and after a failed adoption. While Izzy was in her most recent 'crazy phase', she as well as punched Steph in the stomach, and Steph, as can be expected, was worried that she could have lost the baby. Izzy, realising her error was genuinely sorry and very apologetic.

[edit] Breast Cancer and Drew Kirk, Round Two

In the last week of 2005, Steph started having dreams where she and Drew, Libby Kennedy's dead husband, and the man she has always had a major liking for, were an item. She didn't know what these dreams meant, but after this, she found another lump in her breast and immediately knew the cancer had returned. She refused all treatment because of the baby, and her family were quite worried about her. She had a go at Boyd because he was trying to convince her that treatment would be the better option. She later 'kidnapped' Oscar, her 2 year old brother because he was at the time being looked after by Paul Robinson and Izzy Hoyland, and Steph felt her mother was being irresponsible by letting them look after Oscar. When she was found by Stuart, she had a fever, and was then sectioned, no thanks to Max and Stuart. It was later discovered that the fever was caused by a virus, and Steph was mentally and physically fit, with the exception of the cancer. On her return, she made it clear she didn't want Max there, even though it's his own house; saying how she could forgive Stuart for what he did, but could never forgive Max. Despite this, after many arguments, Steph and Max got back together, but Steph said she was still going to refuse treatment until 'Charlie' was born.

[edit] Charlie Hoyland

Steph's baby was carried to term, and she gave birth naturally to Charlie Hoyland on Monday, March 20, 2006. Almost immediately after Charlie's birth, Steph started treatment for the breast cancer, and was told that she was rid of the cancer soon afterwards.

[edit] Charlie's Christening

Lyn wanted Charlie to be baptised, but Steph didn't. This was the cause of quite a few arguments and even led Steph to disown Lyn for a period.

[edit] Baby Belt

In early 2006, Lyn presented Steph with a contract that she was rushed into signing, having not read it first. The contract gave Paul rights to Steph's Baby Belt idea, and Steph would get 5% of the profits. Lyn managed to convince Paul to give her 7%. Steph now invents other things, after her baby belt proved to be quite successful.
