[edit] Playing Career
Yelle was drafted in the 8th round (186th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils. On June 1, 1994, he was traded to the Quebec Nordiques, who became the Colorado Avalanche before he had a chance to play for them in Quebec. Known as an excellent face-off taker and a gritty, hard-working player, Yelle played for the Avalanche from 1995 to 2002, winning two Stanley Cups, in 1996 and 2001. His nickname is Sandbox.
Prior to the 2002-03 NHL season, he was traded to the Calgary Flames, where he played an important role in the Flames' playoff run in 2004 which saw them reach the final, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games. He has since established himself as an integral part of the team. Yelle signed a new two-year contract with the Flames on May 10th, locking him up with the team through the 2007-08 season.
