Step well
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In India, a step well is a deep masonry construction used to store water during the monsoon season for use during the dry season. Step wells are also known as tanks, baoli, baori and hauz. They were built in villages, by temples and in palace compounds. The endowment of a step well by a king was regarded as highly meritorious.
