Stechelberg
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stechelberg is a village in the Lauterbrunnen valley of the Bernese Oberland. The village is connected by the Luftseilbahn Stechelberg-Mürren-Schilthorn (LSMS), an aerial tramway, to Gimmelwald, Mürren and the Schilthorn. The village is protected by the mountains from the weather in Wallis.
Located in the rear of the valley, the area has iron ore with Trachsellauenen and the ruins of an ore smelting plant. The area was deforested for the mining, and so has been declared a protected area (Naturschutzgebiet) to keep it in its present condition.
On February 6, 2003, two avalanches fell onto the village. The inhabitants had precautionary measures however, so the damage was limited to some broken windowpanes. The school was closed for some days, and the villagers were forced to live on stockpiled supplies, because they could not leave the houses.
