1991 Kokkaddichcholai massacre

June 11, 1991 - Government troops massacred 100 civilians in Kokkaddichcholai village, Batticaloa district. As many as 21 women were raped. [1] 20 soldiers were court-martialled; only the commander convicted.

Incidents in 1992

May 20, 1992 - Vattappalai temple, Mullaittivu district, was bombarded during the Pongal festival. 23 Hindu worshippers killed.

August 1992 - 35 Tamils killed in Mahilanthani in Batticaloa district. Soldiers later court-martialled. [2]

1995 Bodies found in Bolgoda Lake

May 31-Aug. 14, 1995 - 21 dead bodies of young men found dumped in Bolgoda Lake. At least 13 were Colombo Tamils, strangled with plastic handcuffs by the Special Task Force. The STF was later disbanded. Colombo regularly had "sweeps" arresting Tamil youths, as many as 500 per day [3]

1998 Testimony of Somaratne Rajapakse

A Sinhalese soldier, Somaratne Rajapakse, was sentenced to death in June 1998 for the rape and murder of a Jaffna teenager two years before. He told the courts of the presence of mass graves where hundreds of Tamil youths had been buried by the army in 1996. Exhumations began and by September 1999 more than two dozen graves had been found, containing as many as 100 bodies, some of which bore signs of physical assault before death. [4]

1999 Puthukkudiyiruppu

September 15, 1999 - Air force bombs Puthukkudiyiruppu market, Mullaitivu district; 20 civilians killed, 40 injured.

2000 Bandarawela massacre

October 25, 2000 - A Bandarawela mob stormed a government-run rehab camp holding former LTTE child soldiers. 25 were killed, all under the age of twenty-five.
