Stavanger Oilers is a hockey-team in Stavanger, Norway. They play in the top division in Norway, namely Get-ligaen (the Get-League). The official name of the club is Stavanger Ishockeyklubb, but they use Oilers in most of the cases. Their home field is Siddishallen.

[edit] History

Stavanger Oilers started in 2000, when a couple of fins that lived in Stavanger missed hockey and started a company team. The development happened quickly, and the plans about joining the Get-League came quickly. The autumn 2001 Stavanger Oilers played their first official game. It was mixed drops Coach Matti Riekkinen could announce at the team upset. It was all from retired national team players and players that had played in the elite series in Finland to local players that did not want to provide any further or had jobs and such things that stopped them. The season was very successful and Oilers came unbeaten out of it, and in almost every game they scored more than two goals. They scored 304 goals that season and the top scorer, Jari Kesti, scored or assisted on 226 of them.

Now the season of 02/03 was standing in front of them and it went smooth, only some small mistakes. The team was getting stronger by some new fins and Tommy Edlund and Thomas Kristensen came from Viking. Hasle/Løren was their first opponent and Oilers won 7-3, and it took 18 more games before their first loss should come. The loss came away against Gjøvik, and the loss was followed by another loss the next day by the same team. They also got beaten by their rival Bergen, and they were also the first team that defeated Oilers in Siddishallen. Both of the double games in Siddishallen finished in a draw, and that secured Oilers the first place, and Bergen took the second place. Jari Kesti got 150 points from Oiler’s 296 goals and had company at the 100 points level by the buddies Suoniemi and Ollikainen. The up jerk was secured by five victories in the qualification before Bergen managed to beat Oilers on penalty kick and joined up to the highest level.

Before Oilers first season in the elite the team had to get reinforced. Some of the fins had to go and other fins came in. The team also got some young Norwegian players, which of different reasons were ready for a club change. The combination of these players was great at once, and Lillehammer was going to feel that in the opening game. Oilers won the game and Lillehammer had to travel home with a loss of 5-1 in the backpack. This was impressing, but the first game they played away was even more impressing. Manglerud/Star was beaten on their home field 0-10! The first loss came from a good know club. Bergen came on visit and surprised many people by winning 2-3. With their good new players and the very good player Joni Hallikainen Oilers managed to get the 6th place and was ready for the final tournament in their first season in the elite. Jari Kesti was top scorer this season also, and he was with that the first player that was top scorer three seasons in a row. Oilers are playing against Trondheim in the final tournament. Picture: Jari Kesti Oilers win the first game in Siddishallen, and managed to “steal” one of the two following matches. This makes a conclusive final match in Siddishallen. Many people came to watch the game, and they managed to get in 2600 people, and then several hundreds of people had to go home again. The teams follow each other the whole game and with a undecided game at full time it is a thrilling sudden death. With only 14 seconds left of the period it should come to an end and Teemu Kohvakka screams himself into the history books of Oilers with the goal that secured Oilers the bronze medals. Storhamar waits in the semi final, but the series against Trondheim has consumed a lot on the team of Oilers, and they loose all three games against Storhamar.

The second season in the elite was going to be hard. Two of the best players are leaving the club: Jari Kesti signed for Vålerenga and Christian Dahl Andersen tried the luck in Arboga in Sweden. The season starts with a victory in Halden against Comet, but a bad loss follows up at home: 3-7 against Sparta. Oilers have variable performances the whole season, and even though Jari Kesti and Christian Dahl Andersen comes back they don’t managed to stabilise the team. After a bad 8-7 loss against the bottom team Bergen Matti Riekkinen decides to go off as Coach. Sverre Høgemark has the responsibility for the team in one match, while he is looking for a new Coach. Gunnar Johansson comes in as a new Coach in January and leads the team to a 7th place. They were now playing against Vålerenga in the final tournaments. Vålerenga had Mason in the goal and several new players on loan, and they won easily.

In front of the 05/06 season the Finish/Norwegian style in Oilers got some new players from Sweden. Höglund, Johansson and Sundin comes from the elite and shall together with the sign of the Norwegian national team hockey player Snorre Hallem contribute so that Oilers can manage their goal of being top 4 this season.
