Stateless (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stateless are Chris James (lead vocals, keyboards, guitars), Kidkanevil (turntables, sampling, programming), Justin Percival (bass, vocals), Dave Levin (drums) and Rod Buchanan Dunlop (FX, programming, keyboards).

Stateless’s marriage of dance, hip-hop and rock takes the classic song structure and fills in the blanks between guitar, bass and drums with intricate, nuanced electronica to create music that absorbs the listener. The EP’s title track encapsulates this balance perfectly: the first listen delivers an achingly beautiful ballad – “I think I might have inhaled you” – but repeated listens continue to reveal yet more layers, subtle flashes of brilliance that draw you in again and again. It’s music that enters your Bloodstream.

The bands new release on Regal, The Bloodstream EP was recorded with producer Jim Abbiss, who has previous worked with UNKLE and The Music. Abbiss passed on some of Stateless’s music to another of his collaborators: the turntablist genius Josh Davis, who you may also know as DJ Shadow. So taken was he with what he heard, Davis immediately enlisted lead singer Chris to provide vocals on some tracks for his upcoming new album. Closer to home, another fan is Radio One’s influential DJ Zane Lowe, who has implored his listeners to pay Bloodstream their undivided attention.

Despite the sonic intricacies of their music, Stateless are not a band bound by the environment of the studio, with a full live show already honed – no DAT machines or backing tracks here: every sound you hear is performed live, with the core of Chris, Jimmy and Jon’s more conventional band set up complimented by turntablist Kidkanevil and Rod on programming. Stateless supported Kosheen on their UK tour last year, before summer festival performances at the V Festival and Homelands. Further live dates are to be announced soon.
