State-related

The term "state-related" applies to universities in the state of Pennsylvania which are considered public universities, but are under independent control rather than being under the control of the state. Because of their independent status, these universities tend to have higher tuition costs. The four state-related universities in Pennsylvania are:

Whereas traditional public universities in the state of Pennsylvania belong to the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, state-related universities belong to the Commonwealth System of Higher Education. This body allows the independent control of the universities while supplying them with the public funds needed for operations at each institution.
