Starbase
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In fictional works (primarily science fiction) a starbase is usually portrayed as a facility strategically positioned in space used to repair and re-supply starships. They are often also connected to shipyard or drydock facilities. One particular case even shows one being used as an ammunition dump. An exception being Starbase 515, based on an unnamed planet.
Many sci-fi series use the idea of starbases in their story lines, most notable of which is Star Trek, which shows huge structures usually (but not exclusively) in orbit around planets.
Two sci-fi series are even centered on a starbase: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5.
The term is not to be confused with "Basestar", the designation for the primary warships used by the Cylons in the Battlestar Galactica franchise. The reimagined series, however, does have one facility of the like, Ragnar Anchorage.
