Star Wars prequel trilogy references to the original trilogy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In this article are contained the respective references inside George Lucas' Star Wars prequel trilogy to the original trilogy. They include:

Contents

[edit] The Phantom Menace

  • In the beginning of the movie, young Obi-Wan tells Qui-Gon, "I have a bad feeling about this."
  • In The Phantom Menace, Nute Gunray says, "Close the blast door!" In A New Hope (post-1997 releases), an Imperial stormtrooper uses a similiar line, "Close the blast doors!"
  • A Jedi Master uses the Jedi mind trick to help himself and his Padawan. In The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn uses the Jedi mind trick to persuade Boss Nass to help him and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi to speed through Naboo's planet core. In A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi uses the Jedi mind trick to convince the Imperial Stormtroopers that "These aren't the droids you're looking for" and to get past them with informal Padawan Luke Skywalker. (A New Hope)
  • Qui-Gon Jinn identifies Queen Amidala's ship as a "J-type 327 Nubian." This is the same number as the bay the Millennium Falcon lands in on the first Death Star in A New Hope, and the number of the platforn the Falcon lands on at Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back.
  • Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator resembles an Imperial TIE fighter.
  • The final lap of the podrace between Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba mirrors Darth Vader's pursuit of Luke Skywalker in the Death Star's trench during the Battle of Yavin in A New Hope. Sebulba's pod racer is X shaped, resembling Luke's X-wing starfighter. Also, part of the podrace takes place in Beggar's Canyon, which is mentioned by Luke in A New Hope.
  • A Jedi uses the Jedi mind trick, but the target resists the trick. In The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn attempts to influence Watto to accept Republic credits as a means of purchasing a new hyperdrive, but as a Toydarian, Watto resists the trick. In Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker attempts to persuade Jabba the Hutt to free Han Solo and Chewbacca from captivity, but as a Hutt, Jabba resists the trick. It is Jabba who calls this technique as "an old Jedi mind trick." Both characters happen to live on Tatooine.
  • Queen Amidala tells the Senate, "I was not elected to let my people suffer and die while you debate this matter in a committee". This is an homage to The Empire Strikes Back, where Han Solo says "No time to discuss this in committee!" and Princess Leia shouts back "I am not a committee!"
  • A Jedi Master is killed by a Sith Lord in front of his apprentice. Consequently, the apprentice screams "NOOO!". Qui-Gon is killed by Darth Maul in front of Obi-Wan (The Phantom Menace), and Obi-Wan is killed by Darth Vader in front of Luke. (A New Hope)
  • A Skywalker saves the day by destroying a much much larger, heavily armed space station, against all odds. Anakin destroys the Trade Federation's droid command ship (The Phantom Menace), and Luke destroys the first Death Star. (A New Hope)
  • The film ends in a ceremony with the female lead giving the award. (A New Hope)
  • A Skywalker is deemed too old to begin his Jedi training. Anakin is deemed too old by the Jedi Council (The Phantom Menace), and Luke is deemed too old by Master Yoda. (The Empire Strikes Back)
  • In The Phantom Menace, Yoda says, "Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering." In The Empire Strikes Back, Obi-Wan (postmortem) says, "Don't give in to hate. That leads to the Dark Side" while Vader himself says to Luke "You have controlled your fear. Now unleash your anger. Only your hatred can destroy me." Both are indications of a character in an earlier made, later set film 'remembering' a conversation had in a film which has not yet been made. (The Empire Strikes Back)
  • A primitive race is involved in an elaborate battle with a technologically advanced army. (Gungans and battle droids in The Phantom Menace, and Ewoks and Imperial stormtroopers in Return of the Jedi) In fact, both Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace feature three battles taking place simultaneously: a lightsaber duel, a ground battle and a space battle.
  • In The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon's body is burned in the manner of a Jedi funeral. In Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader's life support suit gets burned by Luke Skywalker in the manner of a Jedi funeral.
  • During Qui-Gon Jinn's funeral/cremation, Mace Windu says to Yoda, regarding the death of Darth Maul, "But which one was killed, the master or the apprentice?" The camera then slowly pans around the funeral, until finally settling on Palpatine. The Senator's face is in clear focus, while everyone else is blured. The camera remains there for a few seconds, before cutting to the celebration in Theed. This aludes to Palpatine's role as the Dark Lord of the Sith in all six films.
  • At the very end of the movie's closing credits, you can briefly hear the recognizable breathing of Darth Vader, the main villain from the original trilogy.

[edit] Attack of the Clones

  • Obi-Wan foreshadows his death by telling Anakin, "Why do I have the feeling that you are going to be the death of me?"
  • A Skywalker has an arm amputated by a Dark Lord of the Sith with a lightsaber. Anakin's arm is amputated by Count Dooku (Attack of the Clones), and Luke's arm is amputated by Darth Vader (The Empire Strikes Back).
  • Both this film and The Empire Strikes Back end with a momentum shift in the battle for power towards the Sith, a Skywalker getting a new arm, and a shot of a Skywalker, his love interest, and C-3PO and R2-D2 standing together looking into the distance.
  • A character says "I have a bad feeling about this" - Anakin in the Geonosis colosseum. (all Star Wars films)
  • Anakin is told by Palpatine to "trust your feelings". In The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader uses a similar phrase; "Search your feelings," when he is revealing to Luke that he is his father. In A New Hope, Kenobi tells Luke to "trust your feelings".
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi uses a Jedi mind trick. (A New Hope)
  • The hero travels to a sterile and somewhat utopian city where he is met by a seemingly benign administrator who gives him a tour of the facilities while a future enemy is nearby. (Obi-Wan Kenobi in Attack of the Clones, and Han Solo and others from the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back). Both times it is a member of the Fett family.
  • The hero hides from an enemy in an asteroid field. Obi-Wan hides from Jango Fett (Attack of the Clones), and Han Solo and others from the Millennium Falcon hide from the Imperial fleet. (The Empire Strikes Back)
  • R2-D2 repairs C-3PO. In addition, C-3PO asks "Are you sure my head's on straight?" when R2-D2 finishes repairing him. This is a reference to Chewbacca incorrectly putting his head on backwards in The Empire Strikes Back.
  • Owen Lars asks Anakin where he is going when he gets up from the table at the Lars farm after talking with Cliegg about his mother. Aunt Beru asked Luke the same question in A New Hope when he got up from the table at dinner, and Luke had been sitting in the same place that Anakin had been in Attack of the Clones.
  • As an in-joke Jango Fett hits his head on the entrance to Slave I, a reference to the goof in A New Hope when an Imperial Stormtrooper, one of Jango Fett's clones, hits his head on a blast door.
  • As an in-joke, Padme's blaster makes the sound of a .44 Magnum. In A New Hope Leia's blaster can be heard to make a gun shot due to a mistake in sound editing.
  • As a second movie of each trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones both have a ground battle and a space pursuit in them. It is also the only movie in the trilogy to not feature a major space battle (The Empire Strikes Back).
  • Obi-Wan puts a homing beacon on Jango Fett's ship Slave I. This is a reference to A New Hope when Darth Vader puts a homing beacon on the Millennium Falcon.
  • Obi-Wan attaches his ship to an asteroid to evade Jango Fett. In The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo lands the Millennium Falcon on the conning tower of the Avenger to evade the Imperial fleet.
  • Characters from the Original Trilogy that make their first chronological appearance in this movie include Boba Fett (Episodes IV, V and VI), and Beru and Owen Lars (A New Hope).
  • Obi-Wan tells Anakin, "Your thoughts betray you." In Return of the Jedi, Luke tells this to Vader, "Your thoughts betray you, Father." (Return of the Jedi)
  • Obi-Wan half-cynically and half-jokingly says to Anakin, "Why do I have the feeling you're going to be the death of me someday?" which is a reference to A New Hope in which Anakin (now Darth Vader) kills Obi-Wan in a lightsaber duel.
  • In a few scenes on Tatooine, Padme Amidala is sporting the Princess Leia Organa type cinnamon bun hair (A New Hope).
  • During the battle on Geonosis the Separatists are seen with the plans to their new secret weapon. That weapon is the Imperial battle station, the Death Star. (Episodes IV, VI).
  • As a precursor to the original trilogy, the clone army has equipment and vehicles which resemble their later Imperial counterparts. Most notable: the Phase I armor employed by the Clone Troopers resembles the later Phase III armor employed by the Stormtroopers (Episodes IV, V, VI), the Republic attack cruisers are the earliest incarnation of Star Destroyer(Episodes III, IV, V and VI), and the AT-TE walkers are the smaller predecessors of the AT-ATs (Episodes V, VI).
  • Count Dooku offers Obi-Wan Kenobi to join him and says, "And together, we will destroy the Sith", but Obi-Wan replies, "I will never join you, Dooku." In The Empire Strikes Back, Darth Vader offers to Luke Skywalker to join him and says, "And together, we will rule the galaxy as father and son", but Luke replies, "I will never join you!" (The Empire Strikes Back)
  • Anakin sees visions of his mother Shmi in danger. Subsequently, he abandons his assignment to protect Padmé and goes off in an attempt to rescue his mother. In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke sees visions of Han, Leia, and the rest of his friends in danger, and subsequently, he abandons his Jedi training and goes off in an attempt to rescue his friends. (The Empire Strikes Back)
  • Anakin takes revenge against the Tusken Raiders over the death of his mother and confesses to Padmé for doing so, beginning the path to the dark side of the Force. This is a reference to the title change for Episode VI, whose working title was Revenge of the Jedi. (Return of the Jedi)
  • C-3PO informs Anakin that R2-D2 is "carrying a message from an Obi-Wan Kenobi", which is a reference to when he informs Luke that he has a message "for an Obi-Wan Kenobi" from Princess Leia in A New Hope.
  • Padmé professes her love for Anakin before a situation where Anakin could die, that is when they enter the arena on Geonosis. In The Empire Strikes Back, Leia professes her love for Han before he is encased in a carbonite. (The Empire Strikes Back)
  • Count Dooku and the Geonosians threaten to have Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padmé executed, but those executions are nullified by a battalion of Jedi reinforcements led by Mace Windu. In A New Hope, C-3PO says that Princess Leia is scheduled to be executed by the Empire, but that execution is nullified with the arrival of Luke and others from the Millennium Falcon. In Return of the Jedi, C-3PO says that Jabba the Hutt decreed to have Luke, Han, and Chewbacca executed, but those executions are nullified by Luke and Lando.
  • According to the DVD audio commentary, the night club scene on Coruscant mirrors the Cantina scene in Mos Eisley on Tatooine in A New Hope. In both scenes, Obi-Wan severs the arm of an opponent with his lightsaber: Zam Wesell while having a drink on a bar in Attack of the Clones, and Ponda Baba for being hostile to Luke in A New Hope.
  • On Geonosis, at the beginning of the Droid Factory action sequence, Anakin and Padme walk through a door that leads to a dead end, due to an electric bridge not being extended. Padme falls down the pit, and Anakin follows her. In A New Hope, their children, Luke and Leia, find themselves in a similar situation on board the first Death Star, but Luke swings them across the chasm.
  • A Fett serves as a bounty hunter both contracted by and in league with a Dark Lord of the Sith. Jango is hired by and in league with Count Dooku (Attack of the Clones), and Boba is hired by and in league with Darth Vader (The Empire Strikes Back).

[edit] Revenge of the Sith

  • The title is a reprise of an early working title of Return of the Jedi, "Revenge of the Jedi", altered by Lucas with the rationale that Jedi do not take revenge (since revenge is a path to the dark side of the Force). Attack of the Clones shows a hint of this rationale, as Anakin Skywalker takes revenge against the Sandpeople over the death of his mother, beginning his path to the dark side of the Force.
  • Clone Commander Odd Ball's co-pilot gives the "Set S-foils in attack position" command to the ARC-170 pilots. This echoes Red Leader and Wedge Antilles giving the commands in A New Hope and Return of the Jedi.
  • Many vehicles and technology in the film appear to be predecessors of their counterparts in the original trilogy. Examples include (predominantly) the Republic ARC-170 Starfighter looking like the Alliance X-Wing Starfighter, the Jedi Starfighter resembling the Imperial TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor, the Republic V-Wing Starfighter appearing similar to the Alliance A-Wing Interceptor and Imperial TIE Fighter, the AT-AP looking similar to the AT-ST and the Venator-Class Star Destroyer looking quite similar to the Imperial-Class Star Destroyer.
  • In the beginning of the movie while flying a starfighter on the way to rescue Palpatine, Anakin Skywalker says, "This is where the fun begins." In A New Hope, Han Solo says the identical line on the way to rescue Princess Leia Organa.
  • Obi-Wan says the traditional "I have a bad feeling about this!" just before he and Anakin enter the hangar of General Grievous' battlecruiser.
  • The scene where the elevator falls and Anakin has to hold on to the ledge parallels the scene where Luke has to hold on when he falls through an air shaft on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back.
  • In the duel aboard the Invisible Hand, Anakin kicks Count Dooku down off the staircase while Palpatine sits and watches. In Return of the Jedi, Luke does the same thing to Darth Vader in their duel aboard the second Death Star while Palpatine sits and watches.
  • In the beginning of the film, Chancellor Palpatine tells Anakin to kill Count Dooku; when he obeys, Palpatine laughs and exclaims "Goood!" In Return of the Jedi, when Luke overpowers Darth Vader in a lightsaber duel, Emperor Palpatine laughs and exclaims "Goood!" In both movies, Palpatine sits in his chair and watches.
  • Palpatine watches as his current apprentice (Count Dooku) and his intended new apprentice (Anakin) duel to the death, while behind them can be seen a massive space fleet battle, as in Return of the Jedi.
  • Palpatine urges Anakin to kill Count Dooku and when Anakin does, he is set to become Palpatine's apprentice. In Return of the Jedi, Palpatine urges Luke to kill Darth Vader, but Luke refuses, and avoids turning to the dark side.
  • The Invisible Hand plumetting down to Coruscant mirrors the Executor crashing to the second Death Star.
  • In the theater scene, before disclosing his "distrust" of the Jedi Council, Palpatine tells his aides to "leave us" (himself and Anakin) - just as he tells his guards in Return of the Jedi (himself, Luke and Vader).
  • The third part of each trilogy begins with a rescue mission.
  • When Obi-Wan jumps in the middle of the droid army in Utapau, he says "Hello there" to General Grievous. This is the first line Obi-Wan says in A New Hope, to R2-D2.
  • When General Grievous finds Obi-Wan confronting him, he replies "You are a bold one." In A New Hope, when Princess Leia finds Darth Vader confronting her, she replies "Only you could be so bold."
  • When Obi-Wan kills Grievous with a blaster and says "So uncivilized", echoing the line in A New Hope when he talks about the lightsaber being "not as random or as clumsy as a blaster...an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age"
  • When Obi-Wan makes his rendezvous with the Tantive IV, the ship he is flying is swallowed up by the Tantive IV's underbelly. This echoes the ultimate fate of the Tantive IV itself in the opening scenes of A New Hope.
  • In the original Star Wars script treatment, the climactic battle was between Wookiees and Imperial forces as in Revenge of the Sith. This was adapted for Return of the Jedi as the Battle of Endor between Ewoks and Imperial Stormtroopers.
  • Wookiees from Kashyyyk rip out droids from vehicles during the Separatists' invasion. This mirrors the scenes in Return of the Jedi where Chewbacca rips out Imperial forces from their AT-STs.
  • In the battle on the Wookiee planet Kashyyyk, a distinctive Tarzan yell can be heard, just as in Return of the Jedi, when Chewbacca and two Ewoks swing toward an Imperial Scout Walker on Endor.
  • In convincing him that the Jedi are trying to oust him as Chancellor, Palpatine urges Anakin to "search your feelings...you know, don't you?" This mirrors The Empire Strikes Back, in which Vader convinces Luke that he is his father, urging the boy to "Search your feelings. You know it to be true."
  • Palpatine closes his eyes and tells Anakin, "I can feel your anger." He says the same line, directed at Luke, in Return of the Jedi.
  • Anakin is conflicted to choose between Palpatine and a fellow Jedi, as in Return of the Jedi.
  • The scene where Mace Windu has his blade at Palpatine's throat is similar to that when Darth Vader has his blade at Luke's throat in The Empire Strikes Back, and when Luke Skywalker had his blade at Vader's throat in Return of the Jedi.
  • Anakin Skywalker cuts off Mace Windu's weapon hand, as Palpatine looks on, and joins the Dark Side. In Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker cuts off Darth Vader's weapon hand, as Palpatine looks on, but refuses to join the Dark Side.
  • When Anakin and Obi-Wan are approaching the Senate after saving Palpatine, the Millennium Falcon is one of the ships which touch down on Coruscant.
  • In the Order 66 sequence, Commander Neyo and his BARC Trooper drop back on their BARC Speeders to open fire on Stass Allie on her Speeder Bike. This is done by Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi to kill a Scout trooper.
  • When Obi-Wan and Yoda return to the Jedi Temple and discover the corpses of their fellow Jedi, Yoda's closer inspection of the bodies reveals that not all of them were killed by clone troopers, that a lightsaber was used as well, implicating one of the Jedi as a traitor. Obi-Wan decides to look at the security holograms despite Yoda's warning that he will find it painful, and he is dumbstruck to find that Vader led the massacre. This is paralleled in A New Hope when Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids come upon the ruins of the Jawas' sandcrawler and find all of them slaughtered. Luke at first suspects the Sand People, but Obi-Wan's closer inspection shows that Imperial Stormtroopers were actually responsible. Luke realizes what this means and races home, despite Obi-Wan's warning that it is too dangerous, and he is dumbstruck to find that Owen and Beru Lars were reduced to burnt ashes by Imperial Stormtroopers.
  • Yoda says, "Twisted by the dark side, young Skywalker has become. The boy you trained, gone he is, consumed by Darth Vader", to persuade Obi-Wan Kenobi to duel his former apprentice. In Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi (postmortem) says to Luke Skywalker, "Your father was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker, and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man that was your father was destroyed."
  • Darth Vader's offer to Padmé Amidala to join him and rule the Empire mirrors his offer to Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back.
  • Vader says, "From my point of view, the Jedi are evil." In Return of the Jedi, Obi-Wan tells Luke, "You will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view."
  • Padmé's last words are, "There is good in him. I know, I know there is still...", referring to Vader. She says it to Obi-Wan on Polis Massa, momentarily after bearing Luke and Leia. Return of the Jedi contains variations of Padmé's last words. In a scene on Dagobah, Luke says to the spirit of Obi-Wan, "There is still good in him", also referring to Vader. He later says that to Leia on Endor. Finally, he says to Vader, "I know there is good in you. The Emperor hasn't driven it from you fully."
  • In the scene where General Grievous's command ship is side by side with a Republic Command Ship, firing on each other, one of the clones aboard the Republic ship emits a classic "Wilhelm scream".
  • Vader sustains severe injuries from the lightsaber duel he has with his former master on Mustafar (his biological limbs are cut off). Defeated, he lies on the side of a lava bank, crawling his way up the embankment. Sensing his danger through the Force, Emperor Palpatine and Commander Thire rescue him. He is then given cybernetic limbs to replace those he lost in the duel with Obi-Wan. A similar situation occurs in The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke sustains an injury from Vader in a lightsaber duel (his weapon hand is cut off), and after falling down a shaft, is left dangling from a weather vane on the underside of Cloud City. Leia senses Luke's danger through the force, and comes to rescue him in the Millennium Falcon. Luke is then given a cybernetic hand to replace the one he lost in the duel with Vader.
  • The blue-bladed lightsaber Anakin/Vader used in Revenge of the Sith is the same lightsaber Obi-Wan gave to Luke in A New Hope. Luke lost that lightsaber in a duel with Vader in The Empire Strikes Back.
  • Yoda, in the duel with Darth Sidious, falls down the massive circular Senate chamber and escapes through the bottom of the building into a waiting speeder piloted by Bail Organa. This also is similar to Luke's situation in The Empire Strikes Back, when Luke, after the duel with Darth Vader, falls down the massive circular shaft in Cloud City and hangs on to the weather vane below the city until he is rescued by the Millennium Falcon piloted by Princess Leia Organa.
  • In one of the final scenes, Darth Vader screams "NOOO!!" when he learns of Padmé Amidala's death, similar to Luke Skywalker's scream of "NOOO!" upon learning that Darth Vader is his father. An actor screams this line in every Star Wars film.
  • The first line spoken in A New Hope is "Did you hear that?" by C-3PO (Anthony Daniels), on the Tantive IV. The last line spoken in Revenge of the Sith is "Oh no!", also by C-3PO, played by the same actor, also on that ship. Also, both scenes were filmed at Elstree Studios in the UK.
  • The final shot of Owen and Beru holding Luke and looking into the Tatooine twin sunset mirrors a similar scene with Luke in A New Hope (as well as a similar scene of Anakin in Attack of the Clones). The music is also the same in all three cases (the Force Theme).
  • More Republic equipment resembles Imperial equipment. Examples include the Jedi Starfighters having small resemblance to the TIE Fighters and Interceptors.
  • Both Anakin's and Obi-Wan's callsigns reference their family connections to the original trilogy. In the novelization, Anakin's callsign is Red Five, the same as his son Luke in A New Hope. According to his action figure, Obi-Wan's is Red Leader, which in Return of the Jedi is used by Wedge Antilles, played by Ewan McGregor's uncle Denis Lawson.
  • Darth Vader uses the Force to choke Padmé on Mustafar, as he believes she has turned against him. However, Obi-Wan then tells him to halt the Force chokehold. Although Padmé does not die from the choke, she later dies of the loss of will to live near the end of the film. This parallels a scene from A New Hope, where Vader uses the Force to choke Admiral Romodi Motti in the Death Star for his lack of faith in Vader and for doubting the Force. Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin then tells Vader to halt the Force chokehold. Although Motti is not killed from this choke, both Motti and Tarkin die near the end of the film, when Luke Skywalker destroys the Death Star.
  • When Darth Vader releases Padmé after choking her, Obi-Wan puts his hand on her head for a while. He does the same thing to Luke in A New Hope after the Sand People attack him.
  • At the end of Obi-Wan and Vader's duel, Obi-Wan wins because he has the high ground. Later in Return of the Jedi, during the Luke and Vader's duel on the Death Star, Luke jumps up onto a platform and instead of following him, Vader throws his lightsaber, apparently having learned from his previous error.
  • Just after Obi-Wan Kenobi takes the "high ground", Darth Vader shouts "You underestimate my power!" This echoes a quote in Return of the Jedi, when Darth Vader says to Luke Skywalker, "You underestimate the power of the dark side."
  • As Darth Vader walks in to kill the separatists on Mustafar, small white rolling droids flee him. Similarly, in A New Hope, slightly larger black rolling droids flee Chewbacca when he screams at them.
  • In Revenge of the Sith, Darth Sidious and Emperor Palpatine are revealed to be the same person, where Anakin learns the raw truth. This is a reference to Episodes V and VI where Darth Vader reveals himself as Luke's father, and knows Vader's past where he used to be Anakin Skywalker.
  • Right after Senator Amidala's funeral procession on Theed, Naboo, one particular scene where the V-wings are flying in between the silver-painted Venator-class Star Destroyers, the formation of the Star Destroyers is an ancestor to the Death Squadron seen in Episodes V and VI. The V Wings have the TIE fighter's characteristic "howl" as they fly offscreen. One particular scene where Darth Vader and Lord Sidious/Emperor Palpatine are staring out of the Star Destroyer's bridge (viewing what is known as the Death Star prototype) is similar to the introduction of Death Squadron in The Empire Strikes Back where Vader is staring out of a window in the Super Star Destroyer Executor (in The Empire Strikes Back, this scene is where the Imperial March theme is first heard in the film).
  • It is interesting to note, that the first lightsaber battle in A New Hope (which was released as the first movie) was Obi Wan vs. Darth Vader and the final lightsaber battle in Revenge of the Sith (released as the last movie) is Obi Wan vs. Anakin/Darth Vader.
  • Near the end of the film, Obi-Wan Kenobi observes the birth of the Skywalker twins. His physical position and facial expressions mirror, almost exactly, those of Luke Skywalker when speaking to his redeemed father in Return of the Jedi.
