[edit] History

The first ever annual Star Awards event was started in 1994. In the first three years of the Awards, MediaCorp handed out just 10 Most Popular Artistes awards-five for each gender-instead of the current 20 (10 for each gender).

The Best Actor and Best Actress awards were only introduced in 1995. Prior to that, it was more of a popularity contest, with Li Nanxing and Zoe Tay winning the Most Popular Actor and Actress award.

The Star Awards has always been held at the TV Theatre on Caldecott Hill. Though there were two exceptions, the first being in 1996 where this annual event was being held at Harbour Pavilion, and 2006, where is was held at St James Power Station.

[edit] Trophy

The Star Awards trophy has seen three different designs, since its inception in 1994.

  • Year 1994-1997: The trophy was a straight column topped with a gold star.
  • Year 1998-1999: The trophy was changed to a cone-like shape with a bigger star.
  • Year 2000-present: A new trophy that is made is Shanghai has been designed, weighing 4kg and cost S$1,000 each. It is designed with an S-shaped crystal body that repersents the word "Star". When viewed from another angle, you can see a letter A. This represents the word "Awards" As such its read as "Star Awards".

The newest designed trophy comes in different colours every year. In Years 2000 and 2004, it was green. In Years 2001 and 2005, it was purple. In Years 2002 and 2003, it was a golden brown. In Year 2006, it was blue.

[edit] Special awards

MediaCorp artistes would receive the All-Time Favourite award in place of the Top 10 Most Popular Award once they receive the popularity award for a total of 10 times/10 years. They would not be receiving any more popularity awards after receiving this award. This system is implemented so as to let younger MediaCorp artistes have a chance to get the popularity awards as well.
