From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Staplehurst ['stei.pəl,hɜst][*] is a large village and civil parish, situated south of Maidstone in Kent, England. The village lies on a Roman road, part of which is now part of the main A229 road through the village. There are 2500 households and 6000 residents.
Staplehurst is governed by Staplehurst Parish Council, Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council.
The name Staplehurst comes from the Saxon words staple (meaning post) and hurst (meaning wood or clearing in a forest).
Staplehurst has a moderate number of shops at The Parade, in what is, roughly, the centre of the village. There is a parish church, All Saints' Church, which is at the top of the hill in Staplehurst, and also a United Reformed Church and a Free church.
Staplehurst has a fairly busy station full of commuter spivs, on the main line from Ashford International railway station to London Charing Cross and London Cannon Street, via Tonbridge. Commuters from Staplehurst, Cranbrook, Hawkhurst, Sissinghurst and other nearby villages without mainline train stations use Staplehurst railway station.
The Staplehurst rail crash is an important event in the history of Staplehurst.
