Stanmore Bay Secondary School (Whangaparaoa College) [1] opened officially in 2006 as the result of the expansion of Hibiscus Coast Intermediate. The school is in a high socio-economic area (high decile number), and has tight zoning rules where students must live to attend the school. This method prevents overcrowding in a most desirable school.

Being a new school, the facilities and technology used are leaders in the New Zealand education system, positioned on an environmentally aware site. 2006 saw the rise of two new high decile schools in Metropolitan Auckland, Stanmore Bay Secondary (Whangaparaoa College) and Botany Downs Secondary School.

Located in Stanmore Bay, on Metropolitan Auckland's North Shore, the school is one of the leaders in the country (recognised by the Ministry of Education) (see ERO report). The school is athletically involved within the North Shore City under the 'North Harbour' Region meaning its competition in this region is amongst the best in the country.

A decile rise is expected, at the current one is carried forward after the 'closure' of Hibiscus Coast Intermediate. SBSS(WC) is a separate entity, and a rise to parallel it with the rest of North Shore High Schools is evident, in its next review cycle.

To prevent 'zone cheats' the college used the 'ballot method' for its foundation year, under the supervision of the New Zealand Police.
