Stambaugh Auditorium

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stambaugh Auditorium is an auditorium located in Youngstown, Ohio.

Stambaugh opened in 1926, and was financed by Henry H. Stambaugh, one of the more wealthy citizens of Youngstown during the early 20th century. The centerpiece of the complex is the concert hall, which has a capacity of 2,554. Stambaugh also features a 9,700 square foot ballroom, a smaller recital hall, and a garden at the south portion of the building, all of which can be rented out for private functions. The concert hall, intended for symphonic music performances, has acoustics that have been widely praised. Stambaugh's architecture has a Greco-Roman design to it.

Stambaugh's address is outside of Youngstown's central downtown; it is instead on the city's north side on 5th Avenue, where many wealthy Youngstowners (such as Stambaugh) lived when the auditorium opened.

[edit] Events

In addition to hosting several private functions, such as wedding receptions, banquets, and other parties, Stambaugh has hosted several entertainers to perform in the Youngstown area.

The only resident organization at Stambaugh is the Henry H. Stambaugh Youth Concert Band, which is not nearly as prominent as the Youngstown Symphony, the resident organization at Stambaugh's counterpart, Powers Auditorium.

Stambaugh does manage to attract an audience with its Monday Musical Club, which hosts traveling musicals and orchestras at various times throughout the year (although they very rarely are on Mondays, like the name suggests). Stambaugh also hosts many stand-up comedians and modern rock acts, as the likes of Jerry Seinfeld and Bruce Springsteen have performed at Stambaugh. Even with the opening of Youngstown's Chevrolet Centre, which can hosts events such as those, Stambaugh still manages to attract them.
