Stage Stores, Inc. is a department store company specializing mostly in retailing brand name clothing, accessories, cosmetics and footwear. The company operates stores mainly in small and mid-size towns and communities, primary in Midwestern, Southeastern, and Mid-Atlantic states with a growing presence in the New England states. Stage Stores is currently headquartered in Houston, Texas and operates 656 stores under the Bealls*, Palais Royal, Peebles and Stage nameplates.

In 1997 Stage Stores acquired C.R. Anthony Co. headquarted in Oklahoma which operated stores in the rocky mountains. With the acquision it converted all Anthony's into Stage stores.
In 2000 Stage Stores filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The closures included the exits of the Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming markets.
On February 27, 2006, Stage Stores acquired B.C. Moore & Sons, Inc., adding 78 more stores (mainly in Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina). By November 2006, Stage Stores by converted 69 of them to the Peebles name and format. The other nine were closed and/or sold.
* Bealls stores owned by Stage Stores are not related to a chain of department stores in Florida that operate under the Bealls name.
